Mox Bank Unveils Home Insurance in Bold Digital Suite Expansion!

Mox Bank has unveiled its latest offering, Home Cushion Insurance, a comprehensive and fully digital home insurance product. Accessible directly through the Mox app, this innovative solution is underwritten by QBE Hongkong and Shanghai Insurance Limited, extending its reach to renters, owner-occupiers, and landlords across Hong Kong.

The Home Cushion Insurance policy is designed to simplify home protection by consolidating building structures, home contents, and third-party liability into a single, cohesive policy. Furthermore, it offers optional coverages for pet accommodation and relocation costs, catering to a broader range of customer needs. The product is structured across three distinct tiers – Basic, Value, and Max – providing flexible options. Coverage limits are generous, offering up to HKD 1,500,000 for home contents, HKD 100,000 for building structures, and a substantial HKD 10,000,000 for third-party liability.

A standout feature of the Home Cushion Insurance is its replacement-as-new settlement approach for eligible home contents claims. This ensures that policyholders receive the full replacement cost without any depreciation being applied, offering superior value and peace of mind. Additionally, the relocation cover provides simultaneous protection for both an existing and a new home for up to 28 days, alongside transit cover amounting to up to 15 percent of the sum insured, facilitating smooth transitions during moves.

This launch marks Home Cushion Insurance as the fourth insurance product under the Mox Insure banner and the third distinct product line, following the successful introductions of Personal Accident Cushion and Travel Pick and Go. This rapid expansion, with four products launched in partnership with QBE within approximately 12 months, underscores Mox Bank's strategic ambition to broaden its services beyond core banking into wealth protection. This is a segment that digital banks globally have often found challenging to effectively monetize at scale.

Mox Bank operates as a licensed insurance agent (licence number GA1073), distributing these products under an exclusive agreement with QBE Hong Kong, rather than acting as the insurer itself. Philip Wong, Chief Commercial Officer of Mox, emphasized that the bank's customers expect seamless, intuitive, and entirely digital solutions for managing and protecting their wealth, and that insurance offerings should meet this same high standard. Lei Yu, CEO of QBE North Asia, reiterated the strength of their partnership, noting the home product as their fourth collaboration in their inaugural year.

The Hong Kong insurtech and embedded-finance landscape is highly competitive. Other digital banking licensees, such as ZA Bank and WeLab Bank, have also ventured into insurance distribution to deepen customer relationships and generate fee income beyond traditional lending and deposits. Virtual banks like Mox face competition from established bancassurance models and their entrenched distribution networks, which have long-standing relationships with insurers. However, digital banks may hold a structural advantage through the embedded insurance angle, offering frictionless in-app enrolment, pre-filled customer data, and the elimination of paper forms, which could reduce drop-off rates at the point of sale. The extent to which this translates into meaningfully higher attach rates compared to branch-based or broker-led distribution remains an open question across the sector.

From a regulatory perspective, Hong Kong’s Insurance Authority has been proactive in licensing both insurers and insurance agents operating via digital channels. The IA Levy framework, applicable to all eligible policies, adds a minimal cost layer, which Mox transparently flags in its product documentation. Selling-process disputes are addressed by the Financial Dispute Resolution Scheme, while contractual disputes are handled directly between the policyholder and QBE. This split is standard for agent-distributed products and important for customers to understand.

Mox Bank, backed by prominent entities including Standard Chartered, PCCW, HKT, and Trip.com, commenced operations in September 2020. It has rapidly grown to hold the seventh-largest credit card portfolio among Hong Kong retail banks by portfolio size, according to TransUnion data for the first half of 2026. The bank’s technology stack has also been successfully transferred to Trust Bank in Singapore, indicating a clear regional export ambition that extends beyond its insurance product offerings.
