Moderate rain till Thursday amid ‘wet’ July’s low spell

Mumbai: Typically the wettest month of the year, July's contribution to the city's seasonal rainfall quota has been relatively subdued so far—IMD's Colaba weather station received 109mm of rain and Santacruz 179mm in 13 days. The average July rainfall for Colaba is 768.5mm and Santacruz 919.9mm.Although June, too, had begun on a dry spell, island city's triple digit rainfall on multiple days not only led to the Colaba observatory crossing the monthly average rainfall of 542.3mm but also doing it four days ahead.

The IMD forecast of light to moderate rain in Mumbai from Monday-Thursday has dampened hopes of the monsoon picking up pace soon.

Experts said the city is likely to see only patchy and intermittent rain through the week. According to a weather department official, the absence of strong monsoon winds and any significant weather system, such as a trough, means conditions are not favourable for sustained rainfall. Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, however, have been placed under a yellow alert (heavy rain) for Thursday.Independent forecaster Rajesh Kapadia said the city will see increased rain frequency and intensity from Thursday. "After almost no rain in the last few days, the city will see some occasional showers on Monday. Due to a weak circulation off the coast, Mumbai is expected to get 25-35mm of rainfall for 36 hours."As per official data, the total rainfall recorded in Mumbai since June 1 has touched 701mm at the Colaba observatory and 692mm at Santacruz. Of this, a significant share came in June—592mm at Colaba and 512.7mm at Santacruz.
