Ministry of Defence withdraws military protection for former Ministers, other civilians
The Ministry of Defence has announced the withdrawal of military protection for all civilians, including certain public officials, former ministers, and businesspeople.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, via a Facebook post on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. He noted that the directive is an important resolution from the Armed Forces Council.
Dr. Boamah explained that the move forms part of the government’s Reset Agenda, aimed at restoring discipline and accountability within Ghana’s security architecture.
“As part of our Reset Agenda to restore discipline and accountability, we’ve withdrawn military protection for civilians (including public officials, former ministers, businessmen and women, among others) who are not entitled to it,” he stated.
The Minister added that the policy is designed to end the misuse of military personnel for private benefit—an act he described as contrary to the professional mandate of the Ghana Armed Forces.
He also cautioned that any military personnel found providing unauthorised guard or escort services would face serious consequences.
Dr. Boamah called for public cooperation to support this reform.
“Let’s work together to promote a more disciplined and responsible use of our military resources. We’re committed to transparency and accountability. Let’s build a more responsible and just society together,” he added.
