Michael B. Jordan Boards Joseph Kosinski's 'Miami Vice' Remake

Michael B. Jordan, fresh off his acclaimed dual role in the summer horror hit "Sinners," is reportedly in early talks to star as Ricardo Tubbs in Joseph Kosinski's new vision for a "Miami Vice" reboot. This developing story has Universal Pictures setting an August 6, 2027 release date for the highly anticipated film. Jordan is poised to step into the iconic role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, the straight-laced half of the duo of Miami undercover detectives.
The role of Ricardo Tubbs has a notable history, having been originated by Philip Michael Thomas in the beloved 1980s TV series and later portrayed by Jamie Foxx in Michael Mann's 2006 big-screen remake. Jordan's potential involvement underscores his status as one of Hollywood's most beloved leading men, a fitting choice for a blockbuster auteur like Kosinski, known for spectacles such as "Top Gun: Maverick" and the upcoming "F1: The Movie."
Reports indicate that Jordan is in early discussions for the part, with negotiations moving positively. A significant factor in these talks was Universal's agreement to align the filming dates for "Miami Vice" with Jordan’s schedule for his latest project, "The Thomas Crown Affair." In this film, Jordan not only stars but also takes on directorial and producing duties via his Outlier Society banner for Amazon MGM Studios.
Jordan's recent success in "Sinners" saw him pull double duty playing twin brothers Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler's horror epic. Released on April 18, "Sinners" garnered critical acclaim and became the highest-grossing original horror movie of all time, earning an impressive $366 million worldwide. His career spans over a decade, marked by impactful performances in films like "Fruitvale Station," "Just Mercy," and the "Black Panther" movies, alongside his ability to infuse popcorn fare with authentic human stories, as demonstrated in the "Creed" franchise.
The "Miami Vice" reboot, first revealed in April, draws inspiration from the 1980s TV series that featured Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. An official logline reveals the film "explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami," specifically being "inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking." Dylan Clark and Joseph Kosinski are slated as producers, with Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy penning the script. Production is anticipated to commence next year, with the movie being filmed for Imax, promising a cinematic experience. Universal Pictures has, however, offered no further comment on the ongoing developments.
