Meryl Streep Takes on Taylor Sheridan with Netflix's Bold New Series

After decades languishing in development hell, Jonathan Franzen's seminal 2001 novel, "The Corrections," is finally set to be adapted into a limited series by Netflix. The streamer successfully acquired the rights to the critically acclaimed book following a competitive bidding process, assembling an all-star creative team to bring the complex family drama to life. This highly anticipated project features Meryl Streep in a starring role, with Oscar and Emmy-winning writer and director Cord Jefferson helming every episode.
"The Corrections", a bestseller upon its release, is a sharply comic yet poignant portrait of a Midwestern family. The narrative centers on Enid Lambert, the aging matriarch who desperately wishes to gather her now-grown, unmoored adult children for one last Christmas together, particularly as her husband's health begins to decline. Her three adult siblings, however, resist her wishes, each grappling with their own delusional ambitions and personal struggles that were meant to save them from becoming like their parents. Franzen himself will adapt his novel for the screen, ensuring an authentic translation of his celebrated work.
The journey to adaptation has been notably long and arduous. Shortly after its publication in September 2001, producer Scott Rudin snapped up the film rights. An initial attempt in 2002 saw Stephen Daldry (The Hours) attached to direct with David Hare penning the script, but the project never materialized. A second film adaptation attempt in 2005, with Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) slated to direct, also failed to move forward, leaving the novel unadapted for years.
The project later shifted its focus to television. A decade after the book's publication, HBO commissioned a pilot for a miniseries in 2011, with Franzen and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) on board. This pilot featured a star-studded cast, including Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Ewan McGregor, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Despite the high-profile talent involved and the completion of the pilot, HBO ultimately decided in 2012 not to pick up the series, further delaying the novel's on-screen debut.
Meryl Streep is set to star as Enid Lambert, the determined matriarch. Widely considered one of the greatest actresses of all time, Streep brings immense prestige to the project. Her illustrious career boasts an unparalleled 21 Academy Award nominations, with wins for "Kramer vs. Kramer," "Sophie’s Choice," and "The Iron Lady." In recent years, she has made notable forays into television, earning Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her roles in Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" (Seasons 3 and 4) and HBO’s "Big Little Lies." She also has upcoming appearances in "The Devil Wears Prada 2" and the sixth season of "Only Murders in the Building."
Cord Jefferson, who recently garnered critical acclaim and multiple awards for his work on "American Fiction" and "Watchmen," will executive produce and direct all episodes of the limited series, ensuring a consistent creative vision. In addition to Franzen and Streep, Mark Roybal and Paul Lee of wiip, and Nicole Clemens will serve as executive producers. Paramount Television Studios is set to produce the series. While the excitement for "The Corrections" miniseries on Netflix is building, no official release date has yet been announced.
