MCU Shocker: 'VisionQuest' Star Confirms Young Avengers Debut!
The MCU is bringing another Young Avenger to the forefront with Tommy Shepard, also known as Speed, set to debut in the upcoming series VisionQuest. Actor Ruaridh Mollica shares insights into his preparation for the role and teases Tommy's storyline as an orphan searching for his lost family after the events of WandaVision. This marks a significant step in assembling the full Young Avengers team.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gradually assembling its Young Avengers, with key members like Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, and Billy Maximoff already introduced. The latest addition to this burgeoning team is Tommy Shepard, famously known as Speed, who is set to make his mark in the MCU after a significant period of growth since his last appearance. Ruaridh Mollica, the star of Marvel's upcoming series, VisionQuest, recently revealed details about his preparation for the role.
Speaking to Collider at New York Comic Con, Mollica shared his immersion into the character's comic book origins. He diligently acquired and read all the Young Avengers comics, stating, "I literally bought them. There's that one of like me and Wiccan on the front, and there's one of, you know, Tommy. He's in like an office, like yawning at his desk, and yeah, I got all of them, of course. Like, what better way to understand the character than how he's written?"
Tommy Shepard's history in Marvel Comics is intricate, often seeing him and his brother Billy (Wiccan) closely linked to the Scarlet Witch and frequently leading the Young Avengers. Billy has already reappeared in the MCU, portrayed by Joe Locke in Agatha All Along. VisionQuest is poised to delve into Tommy's journey and whereabouts following the reality-altering events depicted in WandaVision.
Mollica also offered insights into Tommy's initial circumstances when audiences encounter him in VisionQuest. Rather than being immediately aware of his true identity or past, Tommy is portrayed as a young orphan grifter residing in London. He is plagued by enigmatic dreams and nightmares involving Vision, Wanda, and a family he has no memory of ever having. Mollica elaborated on the character's core desire: "I think ultimately everyone just wants to be seen and be noticed, and I think that's who Tommy is as well. I mean, you meet him as Thomas Shepard, a young orphan grifter in London, you know, and he's not had much of a family, and then he's got all these dreams and nightmares of Vision and Wanda and a family that could not be real, and he just wants love and to be reunited and, yeah, seen."
With VisionQuest slated for release on Disney+, Ruaridh Mollica's debut as Tommy Shepard will be a pivotal moment in expanding the Young Avengers' presence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
