May Allah forgive his shortcomings, Peter Obi mourns Buhari

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is mourning former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

Obi, in a post shared on his , shared a photo of the late president along with a message offering prayers and condolences.

“I have just received the very sad news of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London. His death provides a solemn moment, not just for his family and close associates, but for our nation as a whole.

“President Buhari has always comported himself in a dignified manner as a leader.

“To his wife, children, extended family, and to all Nigerians I extend my deepest condolences.

“May Almighty Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful, forgive President Buhari’s shortcomings, reward his efforts in service to the nation, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen,” he wrote.

The former president died at a London clinic where he had been receiving medical treatment.

A statement from the presidency confirmed that Buhari died at about 4:30 p.m.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from December 1983 to August 1985, after toppling the civilian government of Shehu Shagari. He returned to power decades later as a democratically elected president under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, defeating then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan.

He was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term in 2023.

President Bola Tinubu has declared a national mourning period in honour of his predecessor. Flags are to be flown at half-mast across government buildings for the next seven days.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed for the United Kingdom to coordinate arrangements for the return of Buhari’s remains.

In a statement, Tinubu described Buhari as a “dedicated patriot” who served Nigeria “with strength and sincerity.”

Peter Obi joins a long list of Nigerian leaders and international figures who have paid tribute to the late president.
