Mavericks rumors: More evidence Dallas won't trade Cooper Flagg pick for Giannis

Published 13 hours ago2 minute read

Recently, the Dallas Mavericks shook up the NBA world by winning the NBA Draft lottery, where Cooper Flagg is expected to go number one overall. It was a complete 180 degree flip of emotions for a fanbase who had been enraged after Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this season.

Almost immediately, fans began wondering if Harrison would have the audacity to also trade this number one pick in exchange for a win-now player like Giannis Antetokounmpo, but it appears that Mavericks fans can rest assured that that won't happen.

“All the behind-the-scenes whispers continue to suggest that they will refuse to entertain the idea of fielding trade offers for the No. 1 overall pick in the June 25 draft,” reported NBA insider Marc Stein on his Substack.

Stein added that “Mavericks officials realize last Monday's NBA Draft Lottery dealt them an equally unprecedented reprieve in terms of manufacturing an unforeseen immediate opportunity to draft a new potential superstar for the local basketball public to bond with.”

“No … not even for Giannis,” said one source about the possibility of a trade.

One would be hard-pressed to find a bigger roller coaster of emotions than what Mavericks fans experienced over the last three months. The team became the laughingstock of the NBA by trading away Doncic for Anthony Davis, who was injured in his very first game with the Mavericks. Dallas ultimately wound up missing the playoffs altogether after bowing out in the play-in round.

However, drafting Flagg gives the franchise the opportunity for a much-needed reset, and also makes for an intriguing team in the present with Flagg teaming up with Davis and Kyrie Irving whenever he returns from his ACL injury.

It's unclear if Flagg will ever reach the perennial MVP candidate heights of Doncic (few players in NBA history have), but the idea of a new young star joining the franchise is certainly a nice consolation prize for this tortured Mavericks fanbase.

In any case, the NBA Draft is slated for late June. Despite Stein's reassurances, Mavericks fans will likely be holding their breath until then as long as Harrison is at the controls.
