Matthew Perry's Cherished Possessions, Including 'Friends' Scripts, Go Under the Hammer

Personal items from the estate of the beloved late "Friends" star Matthew Perry are set to be auctioned next month, with all net proceeds benefiting his non-profit foundation. The initiative aims to significantly reduce the stigma surrounding addiction, a cause Matthew Perry championed throughout his life. Perry, who battled addiction for many years and tragically passed away on October 28, 2023, due to the effects of ketamine use, established the foundation to ensure that individuals seeking recovery receive the necessary care, resources, and community support to thrive.

The highly anticipated auction, organized in partnership with the Matthew Perry Foundation and Heritage Auctions, features an array of cherished memorabilia, including many items tied to his iconic role as Chandler Bing on "Friends." Among the standout pieces are a collection of 26 scripts from pivotal episodes such as “The One With Ross’s Tan,” “The One Where Joey Speaks French,” and the two-part series finale, “The Last One.” Additionally, two other scripts, generously donated by Warner Bros., bear the signatures of Perry himself and his co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.

Further "Friends"-related treasures include a unique photo album titled “The One With the Last Supper,” which contains a heartfelt letter from "Jenny" in the back, and Perry’s personal replica of the distinctive yellow peephole frame that adorned the door of Monica’s apartment in the series. Beyond the "Friends" universe, the auction also presents Perry’s 1995 SAG Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a television comedy series, a testament to his acclaimed acting career. Art enthusiasts will find interest in a personal collection of artwork by renowned artists like Banksy and Mel Bochner, also up for bid.

The charity auction is scheduled to commence on June 5. According to a statement from Heritage Auctions, the net proceeds will be dedicated to advancing "Matthew’s most meaningful legacy: building a future free from addiction stigma, where every person seeking recovery has access to the care, resources and the community they need to thrive." Important additional beneficiaries include the Matthew Perry Foundation Fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Healing Appalachia (a recovery-focused sober music festival), and various grassroots recovery grants for other frontline organizations.

For those interested in participating, proxy bidding for the Matthew Perry Estate Auction opened on Tuesday, allowing early placement of bids. Prospective buyers can preview the items in person at Heritage Auctions’ Beverly Hills showroom from May 18-29. The live auction will then take place both online and in person in Dallas on June 5. Lisa Kasteler Calio, CEO of the Matthew Perry Foundation, underscored the mission, stating, "Matthew believed addiction should be met with compassion and science, not stigma and silence. This auction fuels the foundation’s work to expand access to evidence-based care and confront stigma. It is one more way we ensure that no one has to fight this disease alone."
