Massive Update: Jessica Rothe Confirms 'Happy Death Day 3' Will Conclude Tree's Journey

Fans of the popular horror-comedy film series, "Happy Death Day," have been eagerly awaiting the third installment for over half a decade. Following the immense success of the initial two features directed by Christopher Landon, a dedicated fanbase emerged, maintaining hope for the beloved Blumhouse franchise to evolve into a proper trilogy. Over the past six years, updates on the film have presented a series of good and bad news, echoing the cyclical plots of the movies themselves.
However, earlier in the spring, franchise star Jessica Rothe provided a long-hoped-for update, confirming that "Happy Death Day 3" was officially in development. In a recent red carpet interview with Collider’s Aidan Kelley at the Screamfest premiere for her new film, "Affection," Rothe offered further insights into what audiences can anticipate from the much-anticipated sequel. While she admitted to not having seen a script yet, Rothe revealed that she and Landon are currently engaged in extensive communication regarding the project.
Despite the absence of a script in hand, Rothe conveyed considerable optimism about the direction of the story, assuring Kelley that director Chris Landon has the entire narrative meticulously planned. She praised Landon as a "brilliant genius man," emphasizing his vision for the franchise. Rothe stated that the third film will conclude Tree Gelbman's journey, taking audiences to unexpected places while retaining the familiar and beloved cast of characters. It promises to deliver the same blend of thrills, chills, big laughs, and significant emotional depth that defined the previous installments.
Jessica Rothe also discussed her next genre performance in the film "Affection," which premiered at Screamfest on October 7. Written and directed by BT Meza, this sci-fi horror flick shares thematic parallels with "Happy Death Day" by exploring a torturous cycle of confusion. In "Affection," Rothe portrays Ellie Carter, a woman struggling with violent seizures and an unreliable memory, who must piece together facts about her husband (Joseph Cross) and daughter (Julianna Layne) before being caught in another loop. As of now, "Affection" does not have a confirmed wide release date.
The "Happy Death Day" series is known for its PG-13 rating, combining Horror, Mystery, and Thriller genres. The first film, released on October 13, 2017, had a runtime of 96 minutes and was directed by Christopher Landon, who also co-wrote with Scott Lobdell. Key cast members include Jessica Rothe as Theresa ‘Tree’ Gelbman, Israel Broussard as Carter Davis, Ruby Modine as Lori Spengler, and Rachel Matthews as Danielle Bouseman.
