Marvel's 'Daredevil: Born Again' Confirmed to Conclude After Season 3

Marvel's highly anticipated series, “Daredevil: Born Again,” starring Charlie Cox as the blind lawyer-turned-vigilante Matt Murdock, is officially concluding with its upcoming third season. This news, confirmed by Variety and first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, marks another significant shift in Marvel's television strategy. The third and final season wrapped production approximately two months ago and is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2027.

The series has experienced considerable behind-the-scenes changes, including the departure of co-creator and showrunner Dario Scardapane during post-production, as his contract was not renewed. Scardapane was not the original showrunner; the project initially began with Matt Corman and Chris Ord as head writers. However, Marvel dramatically reworked the series amidst the 2023 Hollywood strikes, bringing Scardapane aboard to align the show more closely with the tone and serialized storytelling of the original Netflix iteration.

Charlie Cox originally debuted as Daredevil on Netflix’s critically acclaimed “Daredevil” series, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. This initial series was instrumental in establishing a mini, street-level Marvel universe on the streamer, spawning popular spinoffs such as “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist,” culminating in the team-up series “The Defenders.” Disney+ later revived the show as “Daredevil: Born Again,” with its first season premiering in 2025. The revival brought back several key original cast members, including Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin of New York City, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye.

“Born Again” has been noteworthy for its efforts to reunite the original “Defenders” cast. Season 2 saw Krysten Ritter return as the super-strong private detective Jessica Jones in a supporting capacity, while Mike Colter made a cameo in the finale as her lover, Luke Cage. Furthermore, paparazzi photos leaked during the production of Season 3 revealed Finn Jones back as Danny Rand, the martial arts expert Iron Fist, alongside Ritter and Colter. This reunion is expected to see the heroes team up once again to confront Kingpin, who has been stripped of his title as New York City mayor. Meanwhile, Daredevil himself has found himself incarcerated, and his identity was publicly revealed following the events of the Season 2 finale.

The decision to end “Daredevil: Born Again” aligns with Marvel Studios’ broader strategy to significantly cut back on new live-action streaming series for Disney+. This shift was reported by Collider, indicating that only returning projects already in motion, such as “Daredevil: Born Again,” and potential limited series under the Marvel Presents and Marvel Spotlight banners would continue. The reversal of the previous Season 2 renewal for “Wonder Man” further underscores this change. Marvel's head, Kevin Feige, has been focusing almost entirely on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's theatrical future, including upcoming films like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Feige previously stated that no MCU movie would be released between these two Avengers films, emphasizing a prioritization of quality over quantity. Consequently, “Daredevil: Born Again” and “VisionQuest” are poised to be among the last major pieces of Marvel’s current live-action streaming era.
