Maren Morris' Bold New Chapter: Superstar Announces Touring Hiatus to Pen Broadway Musicals
Country-pop sensation Maren Morris is taking a break from extensive touring after her dreamGIRL Tour to focus on songwriting and family. She aims to dedicate more time to studio work and creative exploration, including a potential pivot to writing for Broadway, while also promoting the anniversary edition of her debut album, HERO.
Country-pop star Maren Morris is set to take a significant pause from touring after her current dreamGIRL Tour concludes on August 15 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The 36-year-old artist revealed during an interview with Today that this will be her last extensive tour for a while, as she intends to dedicate more time to songwriting, creative free-thinking, and her family.
Morris articulated her desire for a break, stating, “It’s been 10 years of touring, so no real time to stop and truly be creative unless I carve out the time.” This decision stems from a need to explore new musical ideas and figure out her next artistic direction, which she believes requires more time in the studio away from the road.
Currently, Morris is promoting the expanded anniversary edition of her 2016 debut album, HERO, titled HERO: A Second Wind. Released on June 26 through Legacy Recordings, this special edition includes newly recorded tracks such as “Hard Liquor and Soft Rock” and “We Can’t Be Friends,” alongside original demos from the initial HERO songwriting sessions. The original HERO album peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, featured the top five Hot Country Songs hit “My Church,” and earned Morris a Grammy nomination for best new artist.
Beyond her musical endeavors, a major motivator for her touring hiatus is to spend more time with her 6-year-old son, who is soon starting kindergarten. Morris expressed her excitement to be home more after this tour run, emphasizing her wish to be off the road during this important milestone for her son.
Looking ahead, Morris is also considering new creative avenues, specifically a move into writing for Broadway. She has already ventured into film writing, co-writing the songs “Kiss the Sky” and “Even When I’m Not” for DreamWorks Animation’s 2024 film, The Wild Robot. Morris shared her enthusiasm for Broadway, seeing it as a powerful storytelling medium that offers more time for narrative development, a quality she finds appealing. Her most recent studio album, Dreamsicle, was released in 2025.
