Manchester City Tops League After Controversial Victory Over Nottingham Forest

Manchester City secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, a win that sent them back to the top of the English Premier League (EPL). The decisive goal came late in the game from Rayan Cherki in the 83rd minute, extending City’s formidable form to eight consecutive wins across all competitions. This result was a hard blow for struggling Nottingham Forest, who had threatened to upset City's title ambitions.
Despite a valiant effort, particularly frustrating City in the first half with exceptional defensive performances from Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic, Forest ultimately succumbed. Manchester City broke the deadlock just three minutes into the second half when Tijjani Reijnders steered a shot past Forest goalkeeper John Victor. However, Reijnders then lost possession on the edge of his own penalty area six minutes later, allowing Morgan Gibbs-White to initiate a break. Igor Jesus teed up record signing Omari Hutchinson, who scored his first goal for Forest, bringing the hosts level.
Before Cherki's late winner, City had a moment where they nearly took the lead again when John Victor tipped Cherki’s drive onto the post, and then made a smart save to deny Phil Foden. But, the Forest keeper was powerless to stop Cherki's 83rd-minute shot, which found the corner from the edge of the box, sealing the win for City.
Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche was highly critical of the match officials following the defeat, citing what he called "bizarre" decisions. Dyche argued that Rayan Cherki's winning goal should have been disallowed due to a foul on Morgan Gibbs-White in the build-up. He also believed that referee Rob Jones should have issued a second yellow card to Manchester City defender Ruben Dias in the second half. Dyche expressed his frustration, stating, "Such an easy game to referee, in my opinion, such an easy decision for VAR [video assistant referee]. When you played so well, to come in and have to talk about officials affecting the game - but they clearly did. Everyone in the stadium and everyone watching at home could see that." This defeat marked Forest's first successive losses under Sean Dyche, following their 1-0 reverse at Fulham, adding to their struggles.
