Malindi's Bold Move: Setting New Standards for African Coastal Tourism in 2025

The Essence of Africa 2025 forum successfully convened in Malindi, on Kenya's vibrant coastline, from October 7th to 9th, bringing together over 300 tourism industry professionals from 40 countries. Hosted at Diamonds Malindi and meticulously organized by On Show Solutions in partnership with ATTA® Events, this event was designed as a highly focused, meetings-driven buyer forum. Its central objective was to fundamentally redefine how African tourism products are contracted, marketed, and experienced on a global scale, prioritizing African innovation and stewardship.
A strong emphasis on action over rhetoric was established from the outset. Renowned explorer and author Riaan Manser delivered an impactful opening keynote, drawing lessons from his extensive solo cycling journey around Africa. Manser challenged delegates with the poignant message, "There’s an ocean between saying and doing," urging both buyers and exhibitors to embrace bolder thinking, braver actions, and the cultivation of genuine relationships essential for sustainable tourism growth. This resonated deeply with the forum's core philosophy that tangible progress in African tourism necessitates practical commitment.
The 2025 edition was strategically designed for maximum business impact, with all 150 hosted buyer and 150 exhibitor spots fully occupied, ensuring a dynamic marketplace where business transactions were paramount. Chris Mears, co-founder of Essence of Africa, explicitly stated the forum's ambitious goal: delegates should depart Malindi with African travel products secured for immediate contracting and ready for inclusion in their portfolios for the 2026-2027 seasons. The forum's popularity was evident in the more than 380 hosted buyer applications received, leading to a diverse delegate mix, including 40 percent from the Americas, 23 percent from Europe, 18 percent from Australasia, and 19 percent from Africa and the Middle East. Notably, 80 percent of the exhibiting businesses originated from East Africa, underscoring the region's determination to shape its own global tourism narrative.
The choice to shift the forum from Nairobi, where the inaugural event took place in December 2024, to the Kenyan coast in Malindi marked a significant strategic evolution. This move aimed to prominently spotlight Kenya’s rich coastal and marine tourism assets as vital components of Africa’s year-round appeal. Amanda Margison, another co-founder, highlighted how Malindi's location offered buyers a direct, immersive experience of the coast’s vibrancy, encompassing marine adventures and cultural heritage. This approach was also intended to extend the economic benefits of increased tourism beyond well-established hubs like Diani and Mombasa, reaching lesser-explored destinations with substantial untapped potential and directly supporting local communities.
Day One’s program seamlessly integrated commerce with crucial conservation themes, reflecting the forum's dual commitment to economic growth and environmental responsibility. Following Riaan Manser’s keynote, sessions included Bahari Hai’s “Living Oceans, Thriving Tourism” and The Long Run’s presentation on “Impact and Integrity—Demonstrating Authenticity and Best Practice in Tourism.” Four "Market Buzz" panels provided in-depth analysis of trends from key source markets across Europe, Africa & the Middle East, the Americas, and Asia Pacific. Additionally, 38 scheduled business sessions and immersive familiarisation trips offered buyers a comprehensive exploration of Kenya’s diverse product portfolio, ranging from luxury lodges and marine parks to vital community conservancies.
Advisory board member Mohammed Hersi further elaborated on Malindi’s unique value proposition. He noted that while Diani and Mombasa are internationally recognized, Malindi distinguishes itself through its authenticity and burgeoning market potential, especially given its historic ties to the Italian market. This offers strategic advantages for exhibitors aiming to penetrate new source markets and aligns perfectly with the forum’s broader objective to unveil lesser-known opportunities and expand Africa’s tourism map beyond traditional hotspots.
The transactional framework of Essence of Africa is designed not only to facilitate immediate deals but also to cultivate long-term economic and developmental impacts. By accelerating supplier-buyer connections, driving bookings, and enabling capacity-building and quality improvements within coastal communities, the forum aims for sustained growth. Suppliers are expected to leave Malindi with contracted, sellable inventory for upcoming seasons, while buyers gain compelling narratives and product confidence, positioning East Africa as a premier choice for longer, multi-faceted itineraries. This holistic strategy is anticipated to stimulate repeat visitation, thereby reinforcing vital conservation and community-led initiatives.
Throughout the opening day, the themes of urgency and decisive action consistently permeated every session and business interaction. The unequivocal call to transition from intention to implementation echoed continuously, with the paramount objective being the conversion of expressed interest into tangible trade outcomes. If the 2025 forum achieves its ambitious goals, Malindi will be celebrated not merely as a host city but as a pivotal catalyst for a groundbreaking new model in African tourism. This model envisions coastal conservation, community benefit, and commercial success as intrinsically linked and indispensable components of the continent’s future travel sector. The blueprint emerging from Malindi offers both inspiration and a challenge for Africa’s travel industry, underscoring that in a dynamic global market, product innovation, strategic partnerships, and sustainability are the driving forces for growth and equitable benefit sharing. The core lesson from this gathering is clear: the future of African tourism rests upon practical action, bold vision, and an unwavering commitment to transforming possibility into verifiable progress.
