Malawi produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), defeating Ghana 2–1 in the quarterfinals to end the Black Queens’ hopes of automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Played at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, August 9, the decisive goal came in the 79th minute when Rose Kadzere completed Malawi’s comeback after Ghana had taken an early lead. The result sent Malawi into the semifinals and secured their place in the next stage of the World Cup qualification process.
Ghana started strongly, with Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah opening the scoring in the sixth minute from a rebound, but Malawi quickly responded through Temwa Chawinga after her effort took a deflection off Grace Asantewaa.
The Black Queens created several opportunities to regain the lead, while goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan made important saves to keep the scores level at halftime. Ghana later had a goal ruled out for offside before Kadzere struck late in the second half, giving Malawi a historic victory.
The defeat represents a major setback for Ghana, which had entered the quarterfinal as runners-up in Group D, while Malawi topped Group C ahead of Nigeria and Zambia. Despite a late Ghanaian push, Malawi held firm to claim a semifinal place and keep their World Cup ambitions alive.
