Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Western Texas

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck Western Texas on May 4, 2025, at 08:05 AM IST, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). The EMSC initially measured the quake's magnitude at 6.5.

The EMSC warned residents of possible aftershocks in the coming hours or days. The independent scientific organization posted on X that the earthquake occurred approximately 50 miles West of Pecos, Texas, with the epicenter located 45 miles North East of Van Horn, Texas.

The United States Geological Survey reported a 5.3 magnitude earthquake 57 kilometers South of Whites City in New Mexico. EMSC advised the public to avoid damaged areas unless necessary and to follow national authorities' information in an X post.

The EMSC reported that tremors were felt across 200 miles by approximately 2 million people in the US and Mexico.

Earlier on Friday, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina, according to the United States Geological Survey. This earthquake occurred between Cape Horn and Antarctica at a depth of 10 km (6 miles) and was followed by smaller aftershocks. Chilean authorities issued a tsunami warning for the country’s southernmost region due to the quake's magnitude.
