Madowo Blasts 'Faded Podium' During Macron's African Visit

A recent diplomatic event in Kenya, the high-profile Africa Forward Summit 2026, co-hosted by Kenya and France, has been overshadowed by an unexpected controversy dubbed "Podium-Gate."
CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo ignited a heated online debate by criticizing the Kenyan government for using a "worn-out" and "faded" presidential podium during President William Ruto's meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The summit, a two-day event that commenced on Monday, May 11, in Nairobi, gathered over 30 African heads of state and global leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, to deliberate on crucial global financial reforms and investment strategies.
Madowo expressed his dismay on social media, suggesting that the subpar condition of the presidential equipment brought "shame to the nation" on the international stage.
He questioned why such a significant event, designed to highlight Kenya's vibrant economy and leadership, would be marred by "neglected" aesthetics, especially with the presence of a G7 leader and numerous other international dignitaries.
The initial day's proceedings were held at the University of Nairobi’s Taifa Hall and the KICC, where the visual contrast of the equipment reportedly caught the attention of both the veteran journalist and thousands of online observers.
The journalist's observation quickly divided public opinion across platforms like X and TikTok.
Many Kenyans defended the administration, arguing that the substantive bilateral discussions on trade and risk pricing held far greater importance than the appearance of furniture.
Conversely, others sided with Madowo, emphasizing that "details matter" in the realm of high-level international diplomacy.
Critics of the government’s protocol team underscored that the summit was globally broadcast, making the podium a central visual element in all official photographs and news segments.
Some also noted the irony of hosting a multi-billion shilling summit while failing to adequately maintain basic state symbols.
President Ruto's supporters, however, dismissed the criticism as "frivolous," preferring to focus on the successful negotiation of new investment deals with the French private sector.
Despite the online stir, the Africa Forward Summit continued as planned. The focus for Tuesday, May 12, was scheduled to shift to the Kasarani Indoor Arena for the "Africa Forward Le Concert," a cultural diplomacy event featuring renowned artists such as Youssou N’Dour and Sauti Sol’s Savara.
This summit signifies a historic pivot in France’s engagement with Africa, moving towards building partnerships based on innovation rather than aid with non-Francophone countries like Kenya.
While Presidents Macron and Ruto diligently discussed the reform of the international financial architecture, it is undeniable that a piece of office furniture unexpectedly commanded a portion of the spotlight.
