Machakos clinicians call off planned strike after striking deal with county gov't
Clinicians in Machakos County officially called off a planned strike just two hours before its scheduled commencement, which was to start at midnight on Saturday.
The decision followed the signing of an agreement with the Machakos County Government aimed at addressing longstanding grievances among the healthcare workers.
Signed at Machakos Level 5 Hospital on Friday evening, the agreement highlighted key provisions, including the promotion of Clinical Officers who have remained in the same job group without advancement, salary increments to improve compensation packages, and enhanced working conditions to support health personnel.
The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) National Chairperson, Peterson Wachira, commended Machakos County for becoming the first county in Kenya to implement career progression guidelines for clinical officers.
This marked a significant milestone in the union’s seven-month negotiation journey following a court directive to resume work and engage in structured dialogue.
His sentiments were echoed by KUCO National Secretary-General George Gibore who noted that the county government has also committed to resolving job stagnation and salary disparities.
"We have managed to have an agreement, which we signed. Last week, we had issued a strike notice which was to materialise tonight. We are happy that this evening, we've found some convergence on some issues," he stated.
"We signed two documents; one is how county governments will promote our members and designate them to their job groups and address the stagnation issue. One underlying issue is that it will be done in concurrence with our career guidelines."
On his part, County Secretary Muia Ndambuki reaffirmed the county’s dedication to supporting clinical officers in providing quality healthcare services in Machakos.
" I wish to celebrate what has happened. A breakthrough to a situation that was hanging over our heads. All is well in the health sector in Machakos. We held discussions with the union and at the end of the day have seen a positive outcome," he underscored.
"I thank the governor with whom we've consistently consulted. This is a win for Machakos and an affirmation of the commitment made by the governor that healthcare is a critical part of her manifesto."
Following the meeting, KUCO pledged to submit the signed agreement to the courts as proof of compliance and successful resolution.
