Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi has officially declared his intention to vie for the Bungoma County gubernatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

This marks a significant political shift from his earlier ambitions to vie for the same seat in Nairobi.

Speaking during a press briefing on Saturday, the three-term Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker emphasised his deep connection to Bungoma and outlined his vision to unlock the county’s potential through inclusive leadership.

“I have come here as a candidate seeking to run as governor of Bungoma. Bungoma is a very strategic county, the third largest in Kenya. The potential in this county is huge, and we need to tap it,” Wanyonyi said.

He emphasised the need to meaningfully involve young people, noting that youth inclusion and economic empowerment would be central pillars of his campaign.

Wanyonyi acknowledged the diversity of the county, which is home to a mix of communities and active social groups, stating that he intends to build a broad coalition of supporters.

“All the interests in Bungoma, business groups, religious groups, various communities — I know there are many operating from here. When we enter the ground, we will find people who will support us, and we will walk together to make sure we fulfil this journey well.”

His declaration effectively ends speculation about his previously stated intention to contest for the Nairobi governor position in the upcoming polls.

Last year, Wanyonyi had presented himself as a strong alternative to lead the capital, promising inclusive governance and pragmatic solutions to the city's growing challenges.

However, the MP now says his focus has shifted entirely to Bungoma, promising a more visible and sustained presence in the region.

“Expect from now my presence here in Bungoma to be more than in Nairobi to find my footing,” he stated.

Wanyonyi also sought to clarify his political positioning amid questions about his party affiliation and alliances.

“I have come as a team, Wanyonyi. Please don’t profile me. Don’t put me in packages that are not there. I belong to ODM, but right now I have come here as a candidate. The rest we shall define in due time,” he stated, indicating that formal political alignments will be unveiled later.

His announcement sets the stage for a potentially competitive race in Bungoma.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa is among those who have declared interest in the Bungoma governor's seat.

This county continues to draw the interest of several high-profile politicians eyeing leadership roles in the 2027 elections.
