M6 Motorway Chaos: 'Serious' Crash Shuts Down Lancashire Route

The M6 motorway remains fully closed in both directions just outside Greater Manchester, between Junction 27 (Standish) and Junction 28 (Leyland), following a serious two-vehicle crash that occurred on Sunday night, October 26. The incident was first reported shortly before 10 pm, prompting an extensive response from emergency services.
Lancashire Police have confirmed their attendance at the scene, located near Charnock Richard services on the southbound carriageway. Emergency services are currently treating individuals involved in the collision. Authorities anticipate the road will remain shut for several hours, urging motorists to seek alternative routes and avoid speculating about the incident online. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash will commence.
National Highways has also confirmed the closure, with their traffic officers alongside Lancashire Police and other emergency services on site. Efforts are underway to manage traffic caught within the closure; vehicles on the southbound carriageway are being released from the rear of the queue. For the northbound carriageway, screens have been requested and once installed, traffic will also be released past the scene.
Detailed diversion routes have been put in place to guide affected drivers. For southbound traffic, motorists should exit the M6 at J28, turn left onto the B5256 eastbound, then right onto the A49 southbound. This route continues to the B5248 Dawson Lane, then Central Avenue, and Euxton Lane. At the roundabout with the B5252, take the third exit, then follow the B5252 southbound to the A581 roundabout, taking the third exit onto the A581 westbound. Continue on the A581 to the A49 junction, turning left, and remaining on the A49 southbound to the A5209 in Standish. Turn right onto the A5209 westbound towards the M6, then right onto Crow Orchard Road to reach J27, re-joining the M6 southbound via the first exit from the roundabout.
Northbound traffic should leave the M6 at J27, taking the third exit at the roundabout to join the A5209. Follow the A5209 in Standish to the A49 junction and turn left. Proceed on the A49 northbound to the roundabout with the A581, taking the second exit onto the A581 eastbound. Continue to the B5252 roundabout and take the first exit. Follow the B5252 to the Euxton Lane roundabout and take the first exit. Follow Euxton Lane to Central Avenue, turning right onto Central Avenue northbound, which continues onto Dawson Lane. At the traffic light controlled junction with the A49, turn right. Follow the A49 northbound to the traffic light controlled junction with the B5256, turn left onto the B5256 westbound, and follow this road to J28 of the M6.
