Luka Doncic Injury Scare: Superstar Exits Game, MRI Looms for Hamstring

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic exited Thursday's 139-96 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder early due to a strained left hamstring and was subsequently ruled out. Doncic is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the full extent of the injury, as confirmed by coach JJ Redick after the game.

The injury occurred after Doncic appeared to first tweak his hamstring late in the first half. He re-aggravated it midway through the third quarter, planting his left leg while dribbling against the Thunder's Jalen Williams, causing him to seize up and lie down on the baseline. Despite receiving treatment at halftime and being cleared by the team's medical staff to continue playing, the discomfort persisted, leading to his early exit with 7:39 left in the third quarter.

This latest hamstring issue is particularly concerning given Doncic's history, as he had previously missed four games in February due to a left hamstring strain and made only a token appearance in the All-Star Game while still rehabilitating. The timing of this injury also carries significant implications for his MVP candidacy. The game against the Thunder was his 64th of the season, and players must participate in 65 games to qualify for end-of-season awards. With only five games remaining for the Lakers, this injury could potentially cost him not only a shot at his first MVP award but also his eligibility altogether. An exception for season-ending injuries requiring a player to reach 62 games and play at least 85% of their team's games (Doncic has played 83%) would also need to qualify under specific CBA definitions, which seems unlikely at this juncture.

The evening was already a disappointing one for Doncic, who checked out with a subpar performance of 12 points on 3-for-10 shooting (1-for-7 from three), four rebounds, seven assists, and six turnovers. The Lakers were outscored by 25 points during his 26 minutes on the court. This loss starkly contrasted the team's impressive 15-2 run in March, during which Doncic was named Western Conference Player of the Month, averaging 37.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 2.3 steals. The game also featured a dominant performance from reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who posted 28 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and just one turnover, underscoring the Lakers' struggles.

Teammates expressed concern, with LeBron James stating, "When you have an MVP candidate on your team, the last thing you want to see is somebody go down with a hamstring injury. ... So, pray for the best, for sure, and a speedy recovery." The Lakers' 18 turnovers in the first quarter, four by Austin Reaves, contributed to a massive 44-21 lead for the Thunder. Despite the blowout loss, the Lakers (50-27) remain No. 3 in the Western Conference and have already clinched a playoff berth. This guarantees them an extra week for rest and rehabilitation between the regular season's end and the postseason's start, while the play-in tournament is held. LeBron emphasized the team's resolve, stating, "Nothing has changed. We still will be [together]. Obviously we'll be tested with the head of the snake [missing]. ... But nothing is rattled. It's one game, it's the defending champions. We get it. We understand."
