Low pressure may bring more rain in Kolkata today: Met

Kolkata: Rain might intensify in Kolkata and south Bengal districts on Monday due to low pressure and monsoon activity, the Met department predicted. The city received multiple spells of rain on Sunday as a thick cloud cover loomed large.A particularly heavy afternoon spell left some streets waterlogged. The showers continued till late evening in central and south Kolkata. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Alipore, the monsoon trough is still active over south Bengal. An upper air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to form a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours. While Kolkata received 12.7 mm rain on Sunday, the rain count could increase significantly on Monday, said the Met office.

Under the twin impact of the low pressure and monsoon trough, heavy rainfall was predicted in one or two places in South 24 Parganas and adjoining areas."Kolkata and the adjoining districts are likely to receive frequent spells of rain on Monday. They are likely to be more intense than Sunday's spells. The showers could lose intensity on Tuesday but will continue. The impact of the low-pressure will last till at least July 15," said RMC weather scientist, Sourish Bandopadhyay.

After six days of sub-30°C temperatures last week, the maximum temperature touched 32.3°C on Sunday. Despite the increased rain, the maximum was predicted to touch 33°C on Monday. Several south Bengal districts, including West Midnapore, Bankura, West Burdwan, Murshidabad, and Birbhum, were lashed by thunderstorms and heavy rain on Sunday evening.
