The suspected killer was shot dead by police following a carjacking after the incident, according to Police Chief Wayne Smith.
Mayor Tom Arceneaux called it "maybe the worst tragic situation we've had" in the city's recent history.
A separate shooting near the University of Iowa injured five people, including three students, the same weekend.
