APM Calls on Tinubu to Withdraw From 2027 Presidential Race

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 presidential election, citing allegations surrounding a narcotics-related case in the United States.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Abubakar, the party questioned Tinubu’s reported efforts to prevent the FBI and DEA from releasing documents connected to the case and argued that the matter should be resolved through a transparent judicial process.

The APM maintained that no political officeholder should be beyond legal scrutiny and urged the U.S. court to determine the matter solely on the evidence before it.

The party also invoked Section 137(1)(d) of Nigeria’s Constitution, arguing that certain convictions involving dishonesty or fraud could affect eligibility for the presidency. It cited the 2024 conviction of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández in the United States as an example of a politically powerful figure being held accountable by the U.S. justice system.

However, the APM’s interpretation that legal efforts to restrict the release of documents amount to an admission of guilt remains a political argument, rather than an established legal finding.

The party warned that Tinubu’s continued participation in the 2027 race could expose Nigeria to political embarrassment and urged all presidential aspirants to submit their records to public scrutiny.

It said its position was based on democracy, justice and the rule of law, while expressing confidence in its own candidate, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

The intervention adds another political dimension to the controversy surrounding Tinubu’s eligibility and the 2027 election, but any constitutional consequence would ultimately depend on established facts and the applicable legal process.
