Political Bombshell: APM Demands Tinubu Withdraw from 2027 Race!

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has formally urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step down from the 2027 presidential election, advocating for a Nigerian leader untainted by allegations of fraud, corruption, and dishonesty. The party expressed firm belief in the integrity, transparency, and independence of the United States judicial system to impartially adjudicate a narcotics-related case reportedly linked to Tinubu, based strictly on legal principles and available evidence.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Abubakar, the APM highlighted concerns arising from Tinubu's alleged attempts to block the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from releasing relevant documents in the aforementioned case. These actions, according to the APM, raise significant questions regarding the president's apprehension about potential disclosures. The party specifically referenced an alleged plea made by Tinubu before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on August 28, 2026, wherein he reportedly sought to prevent a summary judgment and the release of documents purportedly connecting him to narcotics trafficking.

The APM interpreted this legal maneuver as a confirmation of Tinubu's alleged 'fear of conviction' and asserted that the efforts by the president's legal team to delay the case and suppress evidence amounted to an implicit admission of guilt. The party argued that if President Tinubu's lawyers were genuinely convinced of his innocence, they should have seized the opportunity presented by this case to definitively clear his name, rather than seeking to obstruct the release of information. Furthermore, the APM contended that Tinubu's invocation of privacy concerns and the potential political ramifications in Nigeria, particularly concerning the 2027 presidential election, betrayed his unease about the implications of Section 137 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The APM drew attention to Section 137(1)(d) of the Constitution, which disqualifies a person from presidential election if they are under a sentence of imprisonment or fine for any offense involving dishonesty or fraud. The party also underscored Nigeria's commitment as a signatory to three major international treaties governing drug and narcotic control. Maintaining optimism, the APM reiterated its expectation that the U.S. court would reach a decision based solely on the merits of the law and evidence presented. They asserted that 'no individual, regardless of their political position, should be beyond the reach of the law, especially regarding drug-related issues of legitimate concern to the entire world.'

To support its stance, the APM cited the conviction of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández by a U.S. federal jury in Manhattan in March 2024 on drug-related charges, illustrating that political status does not shield individuals from the American justice system. The party emphasized that President Tinubu's current leadership over more than 200 million Nigerians renders his past and present conduct matters of significant public interest, particularly with the looming 2027 presidential election, in which he is a prominent contender.

Affirming its position as being rooted in the principles of democracy, justice, and the rule of law, the APM declared, 'Our position is straightforward: let the facts be established, let the evidence be tested, and let justice take its course.' Consequently, the party reiterated its call for Tinubu to withdraw from the presidential contest, warning that his continued participation could subject Nigeria to undue embarrassment, pain, and cost. Additionally, the APM encouraged all presidential aspirants to be prepared to submit their records to rigorous public scrutiny.
