Local COVID-19 Cases Rise to Eight, Prompting Official Response and Preventive Measures
On June 14, 2025, Manipur confirmed three new COVID-19 cases, raising the total active cases in the state to eight. Among the newly detected cases, two were confirmed from Imphal East samples and one from Imphal West. Of the total eight active cases, one patient is from Bishnupur district, three are from Imphal East, and four from Imphal West. Currently, one COVID-19 patient is hospitalized at Shija Hospital, while the remaining seven are undergoing home isolation. Further contact tracing efforts are underway by the department.
Official sources indicate that the new variant spreading in the country is a sub-variant of Omicron, though the exact variant of the samples testing positive in Manipur will be identified through genome sequencing in another state. Symptoms exhibited by positive cases in Manipur are generally not alarming, primarily presenting as cold, fever, cough, throat pain, breathing issues, and loss of smell and taste.
In response to the new wave, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an advisory to all states, urging them to intensify COVID-19 vaccination drives. As of April 30, 2024, a total of 1,649,699 people aged 12 to 60 years had received the first dose of the COVID vaccine in Manipur, with 1,339,315 having received the second dose. Additionally, around 280,468 individuals have received their precautionary dose, bringing the total vaccinations in the state to approximately 3,269,452 people to date. The advisory notes that the currently circulating variant is showing only mild symptoms.
The health advisory emphasized several precautionary measures: co-morbid and elderly patients are urged to avoid crowded and poorly ventilated areas. Doctors, paramedics, other healthcare workers, patients, and attendants are mandated to wear masks in all healthcare facilities. The public is advised to cover their nose and mouth with tissues or handkerchiefs when coughing or sneezing, frequently wash their hands, and maintain hygiene. It also recommends adhering to COVID-appropriate behavior when symptoms appear, undergoing self-isolation, and seeking testing and treatment at the nearest health facility.
Furthermore, the advisory cautioned against spitting randomly in crowded places, touching eyes, nose, and mouth without washing hands, consuming unprescribed medicines, shaking hands or hugging, and touching contaminated surfaces. Nationally, around 260 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total active cases to 7,400. Nine new deaths were reported, raising the total fatalities from January 1 this year to 87.
Expressing strong concern over the surging new wave of COVID-19, including in Manipur, Thangmeiband MLA Kh Joykisan appealed to the public, particularly those displaced by ongoing violence and currently sheltering in relief camps, to take utmost precaution. Addressing media persons at the Thangmeiband Tombisana high school relief camp, MLA Kh Joykisan insisted that the Governor and Chief Secretary, as authorities under the present President's Rule, should implement special measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially in the congested relief camps across the state.
As a tangible precautionary measure, MLA Kh Joykisan distributed sanitizers to inmates of three relief camps opened in Thangmeiband AC through volunteers. In unrelated but concurrent initiatives, MLA Joykisan also launched a mass tree plantation campaign in Thangmeiband AC, starting with a sapling planted at Thangmeiband Tombisana high school. This campaign, coordinated with various clubs, aims to prevent environmental degradation and mitigate heat waves amid climate change concerns. Additionally, MLA Kh Joykisan conveyed his heartfelt condolences regarding the demise of two young girls from the state in an Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, sharing the pain and grief of their bereaved families.
