Lexus ES: Electric Future and Storied Legacy Drive Innovation

The Lexus ES series, a cornerstone of the luxury brand, has undergone a profound evolution from its inception in 1990 to its latest 2026 hybrid and all-electric iterations. Originally conceived as the ES 250, a more accessible sibling to the flagship LS 400, it faced the unenviable task of establishing its own identity while sharing fundamental components with the middle-class Toyota Camry. Despite its Camry roots, the ES 250 featured unique sheet metal, glass, and interior panels, aiming to blend sportiness with luxury. Powered by Toyota's reliable 2.5-liter 2VZ-FE V-6 engine, producing 156 hp and 160 lb-ft of torque, it offered a smooth driving experience. The interior was meticulously finished, boasting a substantial list of standard equipment for its era, including air conditioning, power features, a six-speaker AM/FM/cassette stereo, and a driver-side airbag. While lauded for its comfort and quiet cabin due to extensive sound deadening, early models had minor ergonomic quirks, such as an obscured speedometer due to a non-adjustable steering column, and somewhat limited rear headroom for adult passengers.
Fast forward to 2026, the Lexus ES line is experiencing a significant shift, moving exclusively to hybrid and all-electric powertrains built on a new "multi-pathway platform." This strategic redirection positions the ES as one of Lexus's pivotal sedans, especially with the discontinuation of the LS flagship. The updated lineup prioritizes comfort, quietness, and value, building on the ES's established pragmatic luxury character.
The 2026 Lexus ES350h hybrid model showcases substantial advancements in technology and efficiency. It is the first Lexus to integrate the automaker’s sixth-generation hybrid system, which includes a 2.5-liter inline-four engine paired with a front motor-generator and a starter-generator integrated into a continuously variable transmission. Enhancements in its cooling system and packaging, a more powerful front traction motor, and a newly available all-wheel-drive (AWD) option with a 54-hp rear motor contribute to a total system output of 244 hp—a notable increase from the previous 215 hp. This improved powertrain, coupled with an increased fuel capacity of 14.5 gallons (up from 13.2), allows the ES350h to achieve an impressive estimated range of over 600 miles and a combined fuel economy of up to 46 mpg. Dimensionally, the ES350h is larger, measuring 202.4 inches long, 75.6 inches wide, and 61.2 inches tall, giving it a bolder, more substantial presence on the road. While this growth enhances its posture, it results in modest trade-offs, with slight reductions in front legroom and trunk capacity offset by gains in front headroom and rear legroom.
The 2026 Lexus ES EV introduces an all-electric variant, available as the single-motor ES350e or the more powerful dual-motor ES500e. This marks a meaningful step for Lexus into the battery-electric luxury sedan market. The EV models are now the quickest and most powerful in the ES lineup, delivering an even quieter and smoother ride. Like its hybrid counterpart, the ES EV has grown significantly compared to the previous generation, extending by 6.5 inches in length, 2.2 inches in width, and 4.5 inches in height, with a 3.1-inch longer wheelbase. This places it closer in size to competitors like BMW's all-electric i5. Its increased height lends it an unusually tall, almost crossover-like profile, yet it retains a conventional trunk. While the larger exterior dimensions contribute to an enhanced aesthetic, interior space adjustments are evident; front headroom and rear legroom improve, but front legroom and trunk space see slight decreases, attributed in part to the integration of the large battery. Distinguishing the EV from the hybrid requires a close look, with both models sharing standard 19-inch wheels with aero covers, though the EVs offer an option for larger 21-inch wheels.
Across its generations, the Lexus ES has consistently upheld its core identity: a comfortable, refined, and pragmatic luxury sedan. From its early days as a Camry-derived competitor to its modern reinvention as an efficient hybrid and powerful EV, the ES continues to adapt to market demands while retaining its relaxed personality and commitment to a high-quality driving experience.
