Lexus Dives Headfirst into EV Arena with Striking 2027 TZ 3-Row Electric SUV Debut

The 2027 Lexus TZ represents a significant milestone for Lexus, marking its first-ever foray into the three-row electric luxury SUV segment. With gasoline prices on an upward trend, this new electric vehicle is positioned to launch at an opportune moment. It is engineered to offer an estimated 300 miles of range, directly challenging established competitors such as the Rivian R1S, Cadillac Vistiq, and Volvo EX90 in the luxury EV market.
The TZ's design principles stem directly from the innovative Driving Lounge Concept, which envisioned an open and relaxing cabin environment that does not compromise on driving enjoyment. Leveraging the instant torque characteristic of electric motors, the TZ promises an engaging driving experience. All trim levels come standard with all-wheel drive, and an optional rear-steering system is available, enhancing maneuverability for parking larger vehicles and improving overall handling. Customers will have the choice between 20-inch or 22-inch wheels. Beneath its sophisticated exterior, the TZ utilizes the highly acclaimed TNGA platform, a foundation that has consistently demonstrated its reliability and versatility across numerous Toyota and Lexus models.
For energy storage, the 2027 Lexus TZ offers two lithium-ion battery pack options: a 77.0 kWh unit and a larger 95.8 kWh unit. To ensure a serene cabin experience in the absence of engine noise, extra sound-absorbing materials have been meticulously integrated throughout the vehicle. Performance estimates suggest that the base TZ model, drawing parallels to the mechanically related Highlander, could produce approximately 338 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0–60-mph acceleration time of around 6.0 seconds. A higher-end variant, potentially mirroring the Subaru Getaway (a twin to the Highlander), could boast a 420-horsepower system, achieving 0–60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds.
The TZ features a comprehensive suite of drive modes, including Normal, Sport, Eco, Range, and a unique Rear Comfort mode specifically designed to mitigate carsickness for rear occupants. The regenerative braking system offers five distinct levels of deceleration, allowing drivers to customize their energy recovery. Furthermore, Active Sound Control generates artificial engine sounds during acceleration and deceleration, a feature that can presumably be deactivated by the driver according to preference.
Inside, Lexus has crafted a luxurious and spacious cabin using sustainable materials such, as forged bamboo and bio-based microsuedes. An airy ambiance is achieved through a slim instrument panel and meticulously designed seats. The vehicle’s low floor and long wheelbase further contribute to a sense of spaciousness, complemented by a panoramic roof that extends over all three rows. This roof includes a power sunshade and the capability to be opened, enhancing the open-air feeling.
Occupant comfort is prioritized with cooled and heated seats for both front and second-row captain’s chairs. A notable first for Lexus, power ottomans are also available, allowing passengers to stretch out in comfort. The third-row seats are designed with a sofa-like cushioning, and access is facilitated by flush seat rails and a convenient one-touch function to move the second-row seats. Adding to the vehicle's versatility, the rear console features a two-tier tray system and is removable, providing an easy pathway to the back of the SUV. Both the second and third-row seats can be folded at the touch of a button.
In terms of technology, the TZ is equipped with Lexus’s latest generation infotainment system, promising an immersive multimedia experience. This system includes 5G connectivity, faster computing capabilities, customizable widgets, and the intuitive Lexus voice assistant. It offers seamless integration with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For an elevated audio experience, the SUV features a premium 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Safety is paramount, with the TZ incorporating the Lexus Safety System 4.0, which includes a full array of functions to assist with acceleration, steering, braking, lane keeping, and traffic navigation, providing both warnings and intervention to prevent collisions.
For charging convenience, Lexus introduces its first 2-in-1 charging port, which intelligently places AC and DC connectors side-by-side behind a sliding cover. Critically, the U.S. model will be equipped with the NACS port, granting access to Tesla Superchargers. Full trim level and pricing details are anticipated to be released later in 2026, closer to the vehicle's on-sale date. The estimated base price is $70,000, with a layout featuring front- and rear-motors, AWD, seating for 7 passengers, and a 4-door SUV body. Output is estimated between 338-420 hp and 323 lb-ft of torque, coupled with a 1-speed automatic transmission. Key dimensions include a 120.1-inch wheelbase and overall dimensions of 200.8 inches (L) x 78.3 inches (W) x 67.1 inches (H). The combined EPA range is estimated at 300 miles, with the vehicle expected to go on sale in late 2026.
