Kufuor Calls for Akufo-Addo Apology to Ghanaians

A significant call for accountability has emerged from within Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP), with former President John Agyekum Kufuor reportedly advising ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to issue an apology to Ghanaians. This apology would address the economic hardship and various governance failures that marked Akufo-Addo's administration.

The revelation came from Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a prominent NPP member, during an interview on TV3 on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Dr. Kennedy stated that he acquired this information "from the grapevine" and expressed his strong agreement with the suggestion. He emphasized, "I have heard from the grapevine that President Kufuor has suggested to President Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians. This is advice I agree with. He must apologise."

During a panel discussion concerning the NPP's upcoming internal elections, the former NPP presidential aspirant further elaborated on his criticisms of the Akufo-Addo government. He lamented a pervasive culture of impunity, corruption, and an "arrogance of power," coupled with the economic difficulties faced by the populace. According to Dr. Kennedy, "There was impunity; there was corruption. There was arrogance of power and there was hardship."

Dr. Arthur Kennedy's comments followed closely on the heels of public concerns voiced by former President Kufuor himself. At the inauguration of the New Patriotic Party’s Patriotic Institute, Kufuor openly questioned the NPP's diminishing electoral fortunes since 2016, asking, "How come our fortunes have been dwindling since 2016, 2020, and now our current state?"

In direct response to Kufuor's query, Arthur Kennedy attributed the party's declining popularity to what he described as poor governance and the perceived indifference of the Akufo-Addo administration to the suffering of ordinary Ghanaians. He asserted that the electorate's frustration led them to decisively reject the party during the elections, stating, "The electorate endured all that and decided to give them the sack during the election."
