Kuami Eugene Reaffirms Ministerial Calling

Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene, a prominent figure in the country's highlife and afrobeat scenes, maintains that despite his significant mainstream success in secular music, he still deeply considers himself a minister of God. In a recent interview, the award-winning artist, born Eugene Marfo, articulated how his profound musical journey originated and was nurtured within the church environment. This early grounding, he explained, was instrumental in shaping both his spiritual identity and honing his artistic talents.

Reflecting on his past, Kuami Eugene shared insights into his formative years, stating, "Sometimes I see a post on social media, and somebody wants to share something—Eugene Marfo will just pop up. I’m still a minister of God, and the transition started from the church." He emphasized the comprehensive training he received, adding, "The church taught me everything—I know how to play the piano, guitar, and everything. While I was in school, I was still doing music and playing drums for the church. I was doing music, but the push wasn’t there like I’m getting now."

He further recounted a pivotal experience in the Volta Region, where he attended a three-day gospel convention. This opportunity arose from an invitation by a pupil-teacher friend. It was during this event, performing as "Minister Eugene Marfo," that he received his first professional payment for his musical services. This early validation served as a significant milestone in his nascent career.

Shortly after this experience, Kuami Eugene entered the popular MTN Hitmaker competition, where he emerged as the second runner-up. His impressive performance caught the attention of Lynx Entertainment, one of Ghana's leading record labels, which subsequently signed him. This signing marked the commencement of his rapid ascent in Ghana’s competitive music industry. He attributed his remarkable rise and sustained success to divine guidance, unwavering support from his family, and invaluable mentorship from figures like Richie Mensah and Eric Goka.

Today, Kuami Eugene stands as one of Ghana’s most recognized and celebrated musicians, celebrated for a string of hit songs including "Angela," "Wish Me Well," "Open Gate," and "Monica." His exceptional talent and contributions to Ghanaian music have been widely recognized with numerous accolades, notably the Highlife Artiste of the Year and the prestigious Artiste of the Year awards at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Currently, he continues to expand his musical footprint, actively promoting his latest single, “Do Better.”
