PDP Internal Divisions and Secretariat Sealing Allegations

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently facing significant internal turmoil, primarily centered around its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum. Former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, has publicly questioned Damagum's leadership, asserting that only Damagum himself can explain why he is allegedly misleading, mismanaging, and creating confusion within the party. Speaking on AIT Focus Nigeria, Ologbondiyan reiterated his long-standing view that it is time for Damagum to step down and allow for a substantive chairman from the Northcentral region, warning that failure to do so would plunge the PDP into continuous crisis. He also recalled the ongoing legal challenge by the party's National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, against the PDP, further highlighting the deep-seated issues.

Ologbondiyan stressed the importance of accountability in leadership, stating that anyone holding an office, regardless of its magnitude, has a responsibility to act fairly, equitably, and justly. He emphasized that Damagum needs to address the public directly about the reasons behind the current state of affairs and the decisions made, including those from what Ologbondiyan termed a “committee of friends.” The former spokesman's consistent call for Damagum to “take his seat” underscores a strong sentiment within certain factions of the party that a change in leadership is imperative to prevent further instability and to resolve the “floodgate of crisis” that has seemingly opened for the party.

Adding another layer to the party’s challenges, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Bode George, detailed an incident where policemen besieged the PDP’s National Secretariat in Abuja, preventing members from holding a scheduled BoT meeting. Despite the FCT Police Command denying sealing off the secretariat, George confirmed the disruption, noting that the officers, though civil, stated their actions were based on “orders from above.” This incident, according to George, was a “disgraceful” experience, akin to being barred from one’s own home, and forced the rescheduling of the meeting to the Yar’Adua Centre.

Despite these internal conflicts and external pressures, Bode George adamantly rejected claims that the PDP is defunct. He described such assertions as coming from “dreamers” and proudly declared the PDP to be the “Iroko political party of Nigeria,” emphasizing that its roots remain deep and intact regardless of recent adversities. George highlighted the party's robust “political management, ownership structure, and camaraderie” as unique strengths that its rivals lack. He expressed fury over the undisclosed source of the “order from above” that led to the police siege, viewing the entire experience as a profound lesson for all party members, suggesting it stemmed from the ongoing crisis and should never recur.
