TCN Expands National Power Transmission Grid by 120MW

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully activated two newly installed power transformers at its 330/132/33 kilovolt Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation, significantly enhancing the national grid's capacity. The General Manager of Public Affairs for TCN, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the 100 megavolt-amperes (MVA) and 150 MVA transformers were energized on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 1:18 pm and 2:56 pm respectively.
This strategic activation has resulted in an additional 120 megawatts (MW) of power being supplied to the national grid. The installation of these new transformers has consequently increased the Birnin Kebbi substation's overall capacity from 300 MVA to 450 MVA. This substantial increase in bulk power is expected to benefit the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), providing an additional 120MW for distribution to its customers across Kebbi, Sokoto, and the surrounding regions.
Furthermore, the enhanced capacity at the Birnin Kebbi substation also ensures that TCN can maintain a consistent and reliable bulk power supply to Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic. TCN reiterated its commitment to the ongoing expansion and diligent maintenance of Nigeria's transmission system, aiming to guarantee a more effective and efficient nationwide bulk power transmission network.
