KPop Demon Hunters' Theatrical Disaster: A Flop at the Box Office and Bleak Sequel Hopes

The animated feature film, KPop Demon Hunters, first premiered on Netflix on June 20, 2025, introducing audiences to a unique premise where a K-pop female idol group, Huntr/x, also secretly functions as demon hunters. The group, comprised of Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho), Mira (voiced by May Hong), and Zoey (whose singing voice is by Rei Ami), is tasked with maintaining a magical barrier known as the Honmoon. This barrier is crucial for preventing demons from entering the human world. In a desperate move to counteract the Huntr/x's efforts, Gwi-Ma, the king of the demons (voiced by Lee Byung-hun), greenlights Jinu's (voiced by Ahn Hyo-seop) strategy to form a male demon idol group. Their goal is to use their fanbase to weaken the Honmoon barrier.
Despite its recent theatrical re-release performing below initial expectations, KPop Demon Hunters has been a significant success since its debut. The film garnered high critical and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, achieving over a 95% Certified Fresh critics' score and a 99% Verified Hot audience score. On the streaming front, it dominated Netflix's Top 10 charts for nearly 20 weeks, even becoming Netflix's "Most Watched Movie of All Time." Its soundtrack also saw massive success, with millions of streams and the song "Golden" nearly reaching 1 billion streams.
However, the film's recent theatrical re-release, which included a Halloween special, showed a decline in box office numbers. While its first theatrical run in August grossed $18 million, the re-release generated $5.3 million in total, with only $600,000 earned on Halloween night. In comparison, its overall 2025 box office total of $24.3 million surpassed the re-releases of films like Hamilton and Avatar: The Way of Water but fell short of M3GAN 2.0. Despite this slowdown in theatrical earnings and a slight slip in Netflix chart rankings (from #1 to #3 for two weeks after a 20-week reign), the film's overall view count remains unaffected due to its status as Netflix's Most Watched Movie of All Time.
Looking ahead, Netflix and Sony are reportedly planning a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters. While specific details about the follow-up are scarce, director Maggie Kang has expressed intentions to address unanswered questions in the next installment. However, the sequel remains in its early pre-production stages, as indicated by Rei Ami, the singing voice of Zoey, who stated she is "waiting for the call." There is currently no scheduled release date, and no plans for a live-action adaptation have been announced. In addition to future film plans, merchandise for the popular K-pop musical fantasy, including official lightsticks as seen in the film, has been released and is available for pre-order on the Netflix merch shop.
KPop Demon Hunters boasts a runtime of 96 minutes. The film was directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, with writing credits going to Hannah McMechan, Chris Appelhans, Maggie Kang, and Danya Jimenez. Aron Warner served as a producer. The main cast includes Arden Cho as Rumi, May Hong as Mira, and Ji-young Yoo as Zoey, with Lee Byung-hun as Gwi-Ma and Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu.
