Concern over gender-based violence (GBV) has increased following the death of well-known TikTok content producer Milcah Nyatuga Murang'a, also known as Milly wa Doc.

Although kidney failure and medical complications following cyst surgery have been identified as the cause of death, her history of physical abuse, threats, and depression is leading to calls for systemic change and investigations.

Milly, who received a lot of followers for her postings about parenthood and love, had previously talked about her challenges in an abusive relationship.

In disturbing social media posts and videos, she described alleged threats from her former spouse, who reportedly planned to slowly harm her with an injection.

"I know I’m in danger. I have already prepared my children for my death,” she revealed in one of her posts.

Police officer Sammy Ondimu Ngare provided more background, stating that he rescued Milly in June 2024 from a locked residence in Milimani, Nakuru, where she had allegedly been assaulted.

"We coordinated her rescue after a distress call from a friend in Germany. She had been supporting the man financially. We advised her to seek help and leave the relationship," Ngare recalled.

Despite their best attempts and her brief escape, Ngare claimed that Milly eventually went back to the relationship, a sadly typical pattern in many cases of abuse.

"You might tell someone to leave one moment, and then they're sharing the same blanket with their abuser the next. We then lost contact. Now she's gone."

Ahead of the 2027 General Election campaigns, former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i has resigned from the World Bank.

Matiang'i is seeking to unseat President William Ruto using retired president Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party.

Matiang'i's campaign secretariat announced on Thursday, June 5, that the former influential CS had handed the Bretton Woods organisation three months' notice at the start of this month, with his contract expiring in August.

However, he is anticipated to return to Kenya from the United States (US) at the end of this month to resume political mobilisation in preparation for an official campaign launch in August, which will pave the way for his comeback to the public scene.

"He has submitted his notice and is now serving his final months. He will return home later this month to reconnect, restore old networks, and lay the foundation," Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi said.

After enjoying free primary and secondary school for more than two decades, parents may soon be placed in charge of paying for their children's education.

Julius Ogamba, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, startled the nation on Thursday by indicating a cost-sharing scheme while calling for a reassessment of the nation's school funding.

Parents may now be one of the possibilities considered by the Ministry of Education to address the financing shortages, which presents new challenges to the idea first implemented by the late president Mwai Kibaki in 2003.

The ministry revealed it has only been able to disburse between KSh 16,000 and KSh 17,000 per head annually for free secondary school learners, falling short of the required KSh 22,244.

The government's plan to reduce the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) burden has been shelved, handing a big blow to Kenyans who already face high taxes.

National Treasury CS John Mbadi said the ministry has withdrawn its plan to lower PAYE in response to the Kenya Revenue Authority's challenges in meeting revenue collection goals.

According to Mbadi, the government would consider PAYE cuts in the Finance Bill 2026. It would also propose lowering the corporation tax rate from 30% to 28%.

The CS warned against cutting PAYE until KRA meet its revenue targets, noting that doing so would jeopardise the country's financial stability.

Rose Njeri, an activist who was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) last week for allegedly disrupting an online session on parliamentary committees, narrated how the police tracked her for over a week before arresting her on Friday, May 30.

On that day, Njeri had gone to attend a graduation ceremony after completing a two-month course on professional development in information technology (IT).

After the ceremony, while taking pictures with friends, an unknown woman approached her and asked her to accompany her outside the building. The woman insisted on her cooperation, which raised suspicion.

The woman forced Njeri into one of the parked Subaru Forester vehicles, which had other people inside.

She explained that her arrest was linked to the website she created to provide Kenyans with an opportunity to give their opinions on the Finance Bill 2025.
