Juja MP George Koimburi Addresses Alleged Abduction Incident

Juja Member of Parliament, George Koimburi, has broken his silence regarding his alleged abduction, providing a detailed account from his hospital bed at Karen Hospital. The incident, which he claims occurred on May 25, 2025, has ignited a significant debate, with law enforcement authorities contending that the MP orchestrated the event.
According to Koimburi, he was ambushed by unknown assailants shortly after leaving a church service at Full Gospel Churches of Kenya in Mugutha, Kiambu County. He recounted, "It was on 25th May, 2025, while I was coming from church... I met the abductors. They blind-folded me and asphyxiated me." He stated they drugged him through his nose, causing him to lose consciousness. His wife, Ann Koimburi, was reportedly injured during this confrontation. The MP further explained, "When I regained consciousness the next day, I found myself in a coffee farm where I got a good Samaritan, a boda boda rider who informed my family, who came to rescue me and brought me to this hospital."
Speaking from Karen Hospital where he is receiving treatment, Koimburi condemned the incident, framing it as part of a wider security crisis in Kenya. "I condemn this act that has been done to me. I condemn all the disasters that have happened through these thugs who are walking freely in Kenya. It is a tragedy that I have witnessed," he stated. He termed himself a "first-hand victim" of abductions and called for increased security measures and government action. "I am urging Kenyans to continue praying for our nation. Continue praying for our government, while also asking the Kenyan government to look into these matters because criminals and thugs have infiltrated and are kidnapping people," Koimburi declared, urging that those responsible should not "walk freely."
However, Koimburi's narrative has been strongly contested by the National Police Service (NPS). Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja described the alleged abduction as "political theatrics," asserting that Koimburi staged the incident. The police allege several motives, including evading arrest in an ongoing land fraud investigation, gaining political mileage, and discrediting the police force. DCI boss Amin Mohamed stated, "Fortunately, we've been able to expedite the investigations and to expose him to the public that the MP was indeed not abducted." The police highlighted inconsistencies in Koimburi's account, with IG Kanja noting, "Upon comparing the vegetation and road dimensions at the scene with those in the video, it was established that the two did not match." Authorities also claimed Koimburi spent time with his alleged abductors.
Despite the police's stance, several political leaders and allies of Koimburi have expressed their support for his version of events. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, after visiting Koimburi, told reporters, "It is not known where he was taken to, but after a serious search, he was found in a coffee plantation badly beaten. He was taken to hospital and doctors have confirmed that Koimburi was tortured by professionals. He has serious soft tissue injuries." Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, also visiting the MP, dismissed the police's claims, stating, "Those who are saying that mheshimiwa abducted himself are just creating a false narrative." Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi echoed this sentiment, challenging IG Kanja's statement.
The case has seen further developments with the arrest of Kanyenyaini Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Grace Nduta and three other suspects. They are accused of involvement in Koimburi's alleged self-abduction, and investigations are ongoing. The DCI has also been granted access to Koimburi's hospital records. The conflicting accounts and ongoing investigations continue to fuel public discussion about security and political conduct in Kenya.
