Kenyan Man Arrested for Allegedly Trafficking Citizens to Ukraine War, Claims 'My Life is in Danger'

Festus Arasa Omwamba, a manager at Global Face Human Resource, an agency accused of taking Kenyans for employment in Russia, appeared before Kahawa Law Courts on February 26, 2026. During the proceedings, prosecutor Kennedy Amwayi highlighted a significant detail: Omwamba, who is accused of trafficking Kenyans to Russia, had allegedly contacted the investigator prior to surrendering. This case has drawn attention to a broader issue of Kenyans being recruited under false pretenses.
Omwamba was identified by recruits who spoke to The Associated Press, after families raised concerns about relatives sent to the front lines. The Kenyan government has reported alarming statistics related to this recruitment drive, stating that over 1,000 Kenyans were recruited to fight for Russia. Out of these, at least 89 remain on the battlefield, dozens are hospitalized, 28 are currently missing, and one individual has been tragically confirmed dead.
An intelligence report presented to Parliament suggested that rogue recruitment agencies colluded with both Kenyan and Russian officials to entice and lure these recruits. The Russian Embassy, however, denied issuing combat visas, explaining that foreigners might voluntarily enlist. For many recruits, the initial promise of legitimate jobs turned into a harrowing nightmare.
John Kamau, one such recruit who managed to escape and sought refuge at Kenya’s embassy in Moscow, stated that Omwamba was responsible for handling the visa applications and travel arrangements. Another recruit recounted being promised a plumbing job, only to have his passport confiscated upon arrival and subsequently be sent to a military camp before being deployed to the front lines. Omwamba’s arrest marks a crucial development in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to dismantle this dangerous pipeline and protect its citizens from such exploitative schemes.
