Keanu Reeves' Comedy Shocks Box Office: Flop Turns Instant Streaming Success!

In an era where movies often struggle to find extended theatrical runs without immediate box office success, Aziz Ansari's feature directorial debut, "Good Fortune," has quickly transitioned from theaters to home viewing, where it is experiencing considerable success. Less than a month after its theatrical debut, the comedy found itself topping the domestic iTunes charts on November 8, surpassing recent horror offering "Black Phone 2," the far more expensive "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" and "F1," and the recent flop "The Smashing Machine."
Ansari, who previously directed episodes of the acclaimed Netflix series "Master of None," initially planned a film with Bill Murray. However, that project was shelved mid-production following accusations of inappropriate behavior against the veteran actor, leading Ansari to pivot to "Good Fortune." The film boasts a notable cast including Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves, with Reeves playing a guardian angel tasked with imparting the meaning of life and the futility of materialism to a struggling man. Keke Palmer also features in the movie; incidentally, her own comedy vehicle, "One of them Days," quietly grossed $50 million domestically earlier this year.
Produced on a reported budget of $30 million, which made it more expensive than "Materialists" (the number one movie on HBO Max), "Good Fortune" concluded its theatrical run with a little over $20 million in the bank. Despite its relatively modest box office performance, the film opened to mostly positive reviews, holding a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator's consensus praised it as "A promising directorial feature debut by Aziz Ansari, Good Fortune's socially minded humor is given wings by Keanu Reeves' heavenly comedic timing."
With a runtime of 98 minutes, this Comedy, Drama, and Fantasy film was directed and written by Aziz Ansari. The cast includes Keanu Reeves as Gabriel and Aziz Ansari as Arj. The official release date for "Good Fortune" is October 17, 2025.
