Sunday, July 13, 2025
Kazakhstan has officially launched the Alatau Amanaty project, an innovative initiative aimed at revolutionizing the country’s mountain tourism sector. This ambitious project connects some of Kazakhstan’s most iconic natural landscapes, spanning a 1,200-kilometer national trail that stretches from Charyn Canyon to the Tamgaly Tas archaeological complex. Through this vast trail, visitors will not only have the opportunity to explore breathtaking natural wonders but also engage in unique cultural and gastronomic experiences that highlight Kazakhstan’s rich heritage. By promoting sustainable tourism, the Alatau Amanaty project is set to boost local economies, empower rural communities, and offer a truly immersive adventure for both domestic and international travelers.
At the heart of the Alatau Amanaty project stands an extraordinary 1,200-kilometer national trail that connects a selection of Kazakhstan’s most famous natural attractions. From the majestic Charyn Canyon, the trail will stretch to the ancient Tamgaly Tas archaeological site, and pass through 24 major infrastructure nodes and 20 local settlements. The settlements, which are home to over 270,000 residents, will stand to benefit from major economic development sparked by the arrival of tourists to the trail’s many attractions.
Alatau Amanaty trail is planned to provide an entire adventure tourism experience, and its emphasis will be on sustainable development. On the way, tourists will pass by a series of attractions such as ethno-villages, glamping and camps, visitor centers, and rescue stations. The initiative will include gastronomic and ethnocultural tourism possibilities so that tourists can experience the rich cultural diversity, traditions, and cuisine of regions they are traveling to.
Several key sites along the trail are already drawing attention from tourists. The Yesik State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, while the Kok-Zhailau tract and Butakov Gorge offer breathtaking natural beauty for outdoor lovers. Additionally, the Alma-Arasan hot springs provide a unique relaxation experience, and Big Almaty Lake, surrounded by towering mountains, is a popular spot for trekking. The ancient Talhiz settlement, dating back to the 8th-13th centuries, offers a glimpse into Kazakhstan’s deep-rooted history, making it an essential stop for culture aficionados. The Oi-Qaragai mountain resort, known for its stunning views and outdoor activities, will also be a prominent feature along the trail.
The Alatau Amanaty project is committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. As part of the launch, a plogging event, which combines jogging and environmental cleanup, was organized in line with the Taza Kazakhstan national campaign. This initiative encourages both locals and tourists to contribute to keeping the region clean and preserving its pristine beauty for future generations. The event reflects the project’s dedication to environmental sustainability, ensuring that tourism development is balanced with ecological preservation.
Another key aspect of the project is its emphasis on involving local communities in tourism development. By creating economic opportunities for rural populations, the Alatau Amanaty project aims to empower these communities, allowing them to participate in and benefit from the growing tourism sector. The development of infrastructure and tourism facilities along the trail is expected to generate jobs, support local businesses, and foster cultural exchange between visitors and residents.
The project will take one and one half years to complete and will work to make Kazakhstan one of the top destinations for adventure and cultural travel to Central Asia. As the trail evolves, the trail of the Alatau Amanaty will offer a diverse experience, like outdoor adventure, cultural experience, and rest, and will have something to offer every type of traveler. The project itself aligns within Kazakhstan’s broader tourism strategy to diversify its economy by attracting more and more tourists to the nation every year.
The Alatau Amanaty project has the potential to revolutionize the tourism industry in Kazakhstan, turning the country into a key player in the adventure travel market. Combining nature, culture, and sustainability, the project presents an unbeatable proposition among travel consumers and local populations alike. As the trail develops, it has the potential to deliver long-term economic, environmental, and social returns, contributing to the strengthening of Kazakhstan’s travel industry and global reputation as a travel destination of choice.
