Katikiro Mayiga Pledges Buganda’s Commitment to Promoting Luganda and Other Local Languages
The Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has reaffirmed the Kingdom of Buganda’s deep commitment to the promotion, teaching, and preservation of the Luganda language, as well as other local languages across Uganda.
Mayiga made these remarks on Monday, July 7, 2025, during the launch of the Luganda news segment on Family Television, which was presented by Amafeffette, at Church House on Kampala Road.
In his speech, Mayiga commended the leadership of the Church of Uganda for their efforts in supporting the Luganda language.
He also emphasized the need for media outlets, especially those under the Church of Uganda’s umbrella, to focus on delivering news that is grounded in truth, accuracy, and fairness.
“I am committed to promoting and preserving our language and other languages across the country,” highlighting the importance of language in preserving culture and identity,” Mayiga stated.
Mayiga also took the opportunity to thank Owek. Mugumbule for his significant role in finalizing the allocation of land for the ‘Janan Luwum Church House,’ which serves as the headquarters for the Church’s TV station and the venue for the news segment’s launch.
During the ceremony, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Steven Kazimba Mugalu, called on media organizations to avoid sensational or misleading news that could spread fear or despair among the public.
He stressed the importance of reporting stories that inspire hope and positivity.
“We should be careful not to spread alarming and misleading news, such as ‘They are dead’ or ‘They are losing their minds,’ as this only creates unnecessary fear and robs people of hope,” Archbishop Kazimba said.
The newly launched Luganda news segment will be broadcast daily at 12 noon. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards preserving Uganda’s cultural heritage through the promotion of its languages.
