Kaizer Chiefs Stumble Again! Richards Bay Inflicts Third Consecutive Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay FC at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex in a crucial Betway Premiership clash, marking their third consecutive lossfollowing defeats to Stellenbosch FC (2-1) and Orlando Pirates (3-0).

The result highlighted a worrying dip in form for the Glamour Boys, who entered the match sitting fifth in the league with 30 points from 17 games.

While Richards Bay FC, previously struggling near the bottom, climbed to ninth with 23 points from 18 matches after securing their first win in seven outings.

Co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze made five changes to the starting lineup from their previous match, bringing in Dillan Solomons, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Asanele Velebayi, Gaston Sirino, and debutant left-back Shinga.

Injuries and suspensions forced last-minute adjustments, with Bradley Cross starting in central defence after Inacio Miguel was injured during warm-up.

Richards Bay, under Ronnie Gabriel, fielded a disciplined side featuring Sanele Barnes, Gumede, and Lundi Mahala, opting for a compact defensive setup to frustrate the Chiefs.

The match began with Kaizer Chiefs asserting early control, creating sporadic opportunities but failing to convert.

In the first half, Richards Bay’s Lundi Mahala missed a promising chance in the 23rd minute, while Gaston Sirino and Ethan Chislett combined late in the half to test the opposition, with both efforts going narrowly wide.

Despite dominating possession at times, Chiefs could not break down a patient and organized Richards Bay defence, and the first half ended goalless.

The decisive moment came in the 69th minute when Sanele Barnes’ diagonal ball found Gumede inside the penalty area, who turned past two defenders and calmly slotted home.

Kaizer Chiefs pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, leaving space at the back, but Richards Bay remained dangerous on the counter, missing three late opportunities to extend their lead.

The 1-0 victory marked a morale-boosting result for the Natal Rich Boys and deepened the challenges facing Kaizer Chiefs during this difficult period.
