Kaizer Chiefs Crisis Deepens: Fan Protests Rock Club as Ex-Coach Reveals Shocking Secrets

Stuart Baxter, the former Kaizer Chiefs head coach, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his two tenures at the club, revealing stark differences between them. His initial spell at Naturena, from 2012 to 2015, was highly successful, culminating in two league titles. This period was characterized by clear roles and the coach being empowered to do his job, fostering a distinct identity that led to significant success. Baxter abruptly left the Soweto giants after securing his second league title, and since his departure, Kaizer Chiefs have only managed to win a single trophy over the subsequent eleven years, a testament to the success of his first term.
Despite rejoining the club in 2021, Baxter's second stint with Amakhosi was notably short-lived and fraught with issues. According to Baxter, if Kaizer Chiefs truly wish to learn from the "Baxter saga," they must acknowledge the crucial difference: during his second spell, roles became blurred, and "egos were involved." He explicitly claimed that he was instructed on which players to acquire, who to select for matches, and even how to implement tactical setups. This environment, where he felt compelled to "follow a script written by others," was a drastic departure from his first successful tenure, making it impossible to cultivate a winning culture. Baxter, who remains the last Chiefs coach to win the league title, suggested that previous coaches like Gavin Hunt, Arthur Zwane, and Ernst Middendorp should have been afforded more time, emphasizing the need for the club to restore clarity in its operational structure.
In other recent Kaizer Chiefs news, the club faces challenges both on and off the field. Reports highlight dismal statistics concerning Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, painting a less-than-favourable picture of his performance. Furthermore, the club is grappling with significant injury concerns ahead of their crucial battle against Durban City, adding to the difficulties already facing the team.
Adding a different perspective on club and national team loyalty, former Kaizer Chiefs midfield enforcer Willard Katsande has expressed his willingness to coach the Zimbabwe national football team for free. This remarkable offer stems from a profound sense of indebtedness to the Warriors, who played a pivotal role in facilitating his move to Naturena. Katsande revealed that after being released by Ajax Cape Town, his fortunes changed during a national team camp for a friendly against Zambia. The then-Zimbabwe coach, Norman Mapeza, called him up, a decision that would prove career-altering.
During that friendly match, Kaizer Chiefs' Bobby Motaung was present to scout defender Lincoln Zvasiya. While observing, Motaung inquired about Katsande to former Chiefs midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha, sparking the club's interest in the tough-tackling midfielder. The deal was swiftly finalized while Katsande was still in the national team camp. Upon his return to South Africa, despite Ajax Cape Town's coach requesting him to sign a termination agreement, Katsande was unfazed, confident in his next destination. He informed the coach of his imminent move to Kaizer Chiefs, a transfer confirmed by Ajax officials who acknowledged the receipt of the transfer fee. This sequence of events, catalyzed by his national team call-up, allowed Katsande to join Amakhosi, where he became a fan favourite and a highly respected player.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs have strongly condemned threats of violence that followed a small protest staged by supporters at the club’s training headquarters over the weekend. The club, while acknowledging and respecting the passion of the Amakhosi Faithful and recognizing their frustration over recent on-field performances, categorically stated that "ultimatums and threats of violence directed at the club... are unacceptable and will not be tolerated." The Soweto giants also voiced concerns over "false claims" allegedly made after the protest that were not part of the official document handed to club representatives, fearing such claims could create division. They urged constructive engagement and called on media to verify information to prevent misinformation or the promotion of violence in football.
The club also defended its organised fan branches, describing them as disciplined supporters and condemning verbal attacks or threats against them. Despite the prevailing tensions, Kaizer Chiefs reiterated that supporters are integral to its identity and history, emphasizing the solidarity that has carried them through both successes and tribulations. The club remains committed to improving its performances on the pitch and urged fans to continue their support positively and respectfully, expressing confidence that "these tough times too shall pass, and the days of glory will return." Currently, Kaizer Chiefs sit in sixth place in the Betway Premiership standings with 30 points from 18 matches, trailing log leaders Orlando Pirates by 17 points. They do, however, hold two matches in hand over all five teams above them. Their next league fixture is a home game against fourth-placed Durban City on Sunday, April 15.
