K-Pop and 'Squid Game' Stars Team Up for Netflix's Explosive 'Extraction' Universe Expansion!

Netflix is expanding its highly successful "Extraction" franchise with a new Korean spin-off titled "Tygo," an action thriller set to feature a powerful ensemble cast including Blackpink member Lalisa "Lisa" Manobal, Korean action star Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok), and "Squid Game" actor Lee Jin-uk. This project marks a significant step for Netflix, aiming to infuse its most successful action property with the distinctive prowess of Korean filmmaking.
The film is being produced by Big Punch Pictures, AGBO, and TGIM, with Nova Film Inc and B&C Group serving as co-producers. It's based on an original graphic novel created by Anthony and Joe Russo with Ande Parks. The producing team includes Don Lee for Big Punch Pictures; Anthony and Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Albert J. Kim for AGBO; Won-ki Choi for Nova Film; and Chris S. Lee for B&C Group, emphasizing a strong collaborative effort behind the scenes.
"Tygo" will be directed by Lee Sang-yong, known for his work on "The Roundup" and "The Roundup: No Way Out" (also referred to as "The Outlaws 2"), and written by Cha Woo-jin. The narrative follows Tygo, portrayed by Don Lee, a former child soldier who transitions into a mercenary. His story unravels as he embarks on a high-stakes revenge mission through Korea’s treacherous criminal underworld after a crucial operation goes awry. The film promises the signature "Extraction" blend of intense, bone-breaking action and profound, wounded-soul drama, all meticulously infused with South Korea’s unique cinematic style and choreography.
For Lisa, "Tygo" represents her highly anticipated film debut, fresh off her appearance in "The White Lotus" Season 3. Expressing her enthusiasm, Lisa stated, "I’m so honored to be a part of this project and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such incredible actors. Being in an action movie has always been a dream of mine, so for my film debut to be such an exciting project feels very special."
Don Lee, whose extensive credits include "The Roundup" franchise and Marvel’s "Eternals," shared his long-standing passion for the project: "I’m thrilled that this project, which I’ve been developing for years with AGBO, is finally moving into production. ‘Tygo’ brings a distinctly Korean identity into the global ‘Extraction’ universe. We can’t wait to unleash its explosive energy on audiences worldwide."
Lee Jin-uk, an international fan favorite from "Squid Game," also conveyed his excitement: "As a fan of the ‘Extraction’ franchise, it’s a great honor for me to join this universe. I’m especially excited and grateful to be working with Don, whom I’ve always admired, and with Lisa as well. I’ll do my very best to present a film that lives up to your expectations."
Angela Russo-Otstot, producer and chief creative officer of AGBO, highlighted the strategic vision behind "Tygo": "We’re thrilled to explore the world of ‘Extraction’ through a South Korean lens, teaming up with legendary action star Don Lee and visionary director Lee Sang-yong, whose dynamic choreography exemplifies the world-class craft of Korean cinema. Together, we proudly welcome Lisa, a truly multitalented global phenomenon, and Lee Jin-uk, one of Korea’s most charismatic and versatile actors, to lead our cast alongside Don." She also noted that "Tygo" marks AGBO's ninth collaboration, reflecting a shared commitment to bold, global storytelling.
The "Extraction" franchise has already demonstrated immense global appeal for Netflix, with the first film watched by 90 million households within its initial four weeks. The second installment maintained its No. 1 position on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies list for seven consecutive weeks, accumulating over 123 million views. "Tygo" aims to build on this success, promising to deliver a fresh, culturally rich, and action-packed addition to the beloved universe.
