Justice Served: Man Convicted in Horrific Baby Strangling Case
A Mastic man, Amar Corbin, has been convicted of felony strangulation and assault after injuring an 8-month-old baby he was watching. The infant suffered severe injuries, including signs of strangulation and blunt force trauma. Corbin faces up to seven years in prison following his conviction.A Mastic man, Amar Corbin, 25, was found guilty on Monday of felony strangulation, assault, and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of an 8-month-old baby, prosecutors announced. The conviction stems from an incident on May 13, 2025, when Corbin was watching the infant.
According to prosecutors, at the time of the assault, Corbin was consuming alcohol and engaged in an argument on the phone with his girlfriend. The following morning, the baby’s mother arrived at Corbin's apartment, where she discovered him sleeping on the couch with the baby in a portable crib nearby. Upon examination, the mother noticed injuries to the baby’s chest and face.
The infant was subsequently taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center. Medical professionals, including a nurse and a child-abuse pediatrician, confirmed that the 8-month-old displayed clear signs of strangulation and blunt force pressure applied to the chest and face. Further examination revealed bruised cheeks in the shape of a handprint and broken blood vessels, which doctors attributed to pressure on the face and chest.
When questioned, Corbin provided contradictory explanations for the baby’s injuries, alternately claiming they were self-inflicted days earlier or that the marks were merely the result of a rash. Authorities, however, did not disclose whether the injured child was Corbin's own. The baby survived the injuries sustained during the incident.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney issued a statement on Tuesday, emphasizing, "Anyone who would harm an innocent child should not remain free in our community." The investigation into the case was conducted by the Suffolk police Special Victims Section and the district attorney's Child Abuse & Domestic Violence Bureau.
Corbin now faces a potential prison sentence of up to seven years. His sentencing has been scheduled for July 28. His attorney could not be reached for immediate comment.
