The mother of two was going about her business when she was arrested alongside others who were participating in the SabaSaba maandamano.

After they were arraigned in court, they were issued a KSh 50,000 release bond, but sadly, she was unable to raise the amount. Wangui, the daughter of the area chief, later collapsed in prison and was taken to the Cottage Hospital, where she sadly died. Her death shook many people.

The cause of death of Julia remains unknown after autopsy.

"We are finding some things in the lungs, brains, pancreas, and liver, and they can be contributory. Specifically, there is bleeding in the brain, which doesn't look traumatic," said the pathologist.
"We want to look at the brain to know where the bleeding was coming from. The surgeons had opened the head, therefore, we want to see what the doctors found in two weeks' time," he said.

Wangui's grandmother said that they will accept the results.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR) reports that 17 postmortem examinations have been carried out of the 38 victims of the Saba Saba protests, and many pointed towards gunshot wounds.

Mrs Eveleen Mitei:

"A death in custody without answers is a deep stain on justice. Julia Wangui deserves more than mystery—she deserves truth and accountability."

Jack Baracka:

"A total of 38 people are reported dead . Most are men. Say their names too. NTV mainly focuses on women, pertinent issues like these need not the gender nonsense."

Pass Word:

"Head bleeding is fully autopsies that indicate everything, we don't understand what is father examiner autopsies."

Ngecu Kandufrema:

"International Criminal Court - ICC Please help us Kenyans before it is too late. Kindly save these ones in your gallery and use them against the most corrupt, dangerous and greedy government."

Joseph Paul:

"Those who are in charge of the prison should be taken to the court to explain the cause of death of Julie Wangui. And the government have to pay wangui. For she died at the hands of the government."

In another story, protests erupted in Nanyuki after friends and family learnt of the death of Julia.

According to reports, the mother of two was in good health as she left home.

Area residents joined her family in demanding justice for the deceased.
