Juan Soto Jeered in Return to Yankee Stadium as a Met

Juan Soto, after a single season with the New York Yankees and a trip to the 2024 World Series, transitioned to the New York Mets, signing a landmark contract. The Mets initiated a three-game series against the Yankees on Friday night, and despite the Yankees initially leading 4-0, much of the focus was on Soto's initial appearance at the plate. This Subway Series game marked Soto's first return to Yankee Stadium since joining the Mets.

As Soto approached the batter's box in the first inning, he was met with loud boos from the stadium crowd. In response, the 26-year-old right fielder tipped his helmet to the fans, seemingly acknowledging their reaction and even appearing to mouth the words "thank you." He subsequently drew a walk. The booing continued as he took his position in right field during the bottom of the inning.

Prior to the game, Soto had expressed his anticipation regarding the potential negative reception from Yankees fans but maintained his excitement about playing in the Bronx again. He had previously stated that he was "expecting the worst" from the Yankees faithful, acknowledging their capacity for surprises.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone had urged fans to enjoy the game responsibly and "not take things too far." He anticipated "some creativity" from the fans. Soto's move to the Mets was fueled by a 15-year, $765 million contract signed in December, a deal that notably included no deferred money and stands as the most valuable contract in professional sports.

During his single season with the Yankees, Soto recorded 41 home runs and a .288 batting average. As of the current season with the Mets, he has hit eight home runs in 43 games.
