Journey Reunion Dreams Dashed: Steve Perry Declares 'Simply Not True' on Final Tour Rumors

Longtime fans of the iconic rock band Journey were recently stirred by widespread speculation regarding the potential return of original singer Steve Perry. The rumors were ignited by comments from band co-founder and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who hinted that Perry had been approached by guitarist Neal Schon about rejoining the group for their extensive "Final Frontier goodbye North American tour." Cain revealed to Ultimate Classic Rock that Schon had indeed extended an invitation, and Perry was reportedly "thinking about it," expressing hope for his return, stating, "It’s never too late. We’ve got 100 shows, so he’s welcome at any one of them.”

Steve Perry's tenure as Journey's frontman marked their most commercially successful period, spanning from 1978 to 1987, with a brief return from 1995 to 1998. During these years, the band produced a string of iconic hits, including the 1982 Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 smash “Open Arms,” as well as 1981’s No. 4 hit “Who’s Crying Now,” and 1983’s No. 8 song “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).” Following his departures, Perry was succeeded by vocalists Steve Augeri (1998-2006), Jeff Scott Soto (2006-2007), and currently, Arnel Pineda, who joined in 2007 after previously fronting a Journey cover band.

However, despite the hopeful sentiments from Cain, it appears that a final reunion with Perry is not on the horizon. Steve Perry himself definitively put an end to the swirling rumors in a clear X post published on Thursday, February 19. Addressing his fans directly, Perry wrote, “I’ve been hearing these recent rumors, and I wanted to speak to you all directly. While I’m always grateful for the love people still have for Journey, the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I want to gently put them to rest. I completely understand why people would hope for that. The music we created together means a great deal to me too.”

Perry further elaborated on his future plans, stating his intention to continue working on “new creative work” and focusing on music that accurately reflects his current artistic direction. He concluded his message by expressing gratitude for his fans' unwavering support: “Thank you for your continued support throughout the years. Your loyalty has never gone unnoticed, and I am forever humbly grateful.”

Since his last departure from Journey, Perry has remained active in the music scene, releasing the solo album "Traces" in 2018 and the Christmas album "The Season" in 2021. He also notably collaborated with Dolly Parton on a cover of Journey’s “Open Arms” for her 2023 "Rockstar" album and contributed backing vocals to various artists, including Robert Cray and Mindi Abair. The confirmed lineup for Journey’s upcoming tour includes Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon, and Arnel Pineda, alongside drummer/singer Dean Castronovo, keyboardist/singer Jason Derlatka, and bassist Todd Jensen.
