John Boyega has confirmed he's open to returning to Star Wars , and has even hinted he's already spoken to Daisy Ridley about the prospect. John Boyega's Finn is generally seen as one character failed by the sequel trilogy, after posters for Star Wars: The Force Awakens appeared to be setting Finn up as a Jedi. The franchise is finally exploring the aftermath of the sequels, though, with Daisy Ridley herself returning. She's hinted she'd love to see Boyega step back into the galaxy too.
Speaking at Fan Expo Philadelphia, in a panel hosted by ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier, Boyega confirmed he's open to returning. In fact, he even hinted he's already spoken to Ridley; directly asked whether he'd done so, he simply answered, "Maybe." Deckelmeier openly asked Boyega whether he has unfinished business, to which he gave a delightful response:
"C’mon, yeah, of course. That would be fun to do, but contractually I’m on three movies and then after that, we don’t know what’s happening until they, you know, give you a few calls and say ‘You should come back’ and all that kind of stuff. And because of the whole storm after Star Wars, I think Disney felt a little bit like, ‘Does he still want to be a part of it?’ I’m like, damn, like, I can like this franchise and still tell you that certain elements wasn’t all the way there. It doesn’t remove your love for the whole entire franchise.
So for me, everybody knows, , it’s dependent on fulfilling the arc that was teased quite a lot during the process. And hopefully, this time, ."

Boyega seems to have given away a little more than he realized, though; notice his precise wording. He's not referring to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's "New Jedi Order" standalone project, announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023; that's a standalone, and it seems to be in limbo. Instead, he's referring to a whole series of movies, something so much bigger. There's only one thing that fits the bill.

Simon Kinberg has been signed up to write a new trilogy, which Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has referred to as "the new saga that moves us into the future." There have been reports that Ridley's Rey will appear in this trilogy, but they've been unconfirmed; Lucasfilm consider Rey their most important cinematic asset, so several ideas seem to be in the works.

The character of Finn had so much potential, and it was largely wasted by the Star Wars sequel trilogy. That said, there have been recent hints that Lucasfilm has begun to figure out the character's post-Rise of Skywalker story, with Kwame Mbalia penning a novel called Star Wars: The Last Order featuring Finn and Jannah. The two former stormtroopers will work to defeat the last vestiges of the First Order, including leaders attempting to brainwash new stormtroopers.
This in itself had seemed like a positive step, a hint that Finn's future had been decided; Lucasfilm tend not to sign off on character stories until everything is firmed up. We can only hope this is indeed the case, and that Boyega is set to return. He deserves the chance to shine in as a Jedi at last.
