Jobless Teachers Continue Protest in Bengal

Teachers who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court order have continued their protest outside the West Bengal Education Department headquarters for the third day, demanding reinstatement. The Supreme Court had invalidated the appointment of over 25,000 teachers, terming the selection process tainted. The protesting teachers assembled around Bikash Bhavan, the West Bengal Education Department's headquarters, and continued their sit-in throughout Friday night into Saturday morning peacefully, while police personnel monitored from a distance.
The teachers, who had cleared the 2016 School Service Commission (SSC) examination, are demanding that the state government take legal steps to reinstate them. The Supreme Court had invalidated the appointment of 25,753 teachers and other staff in state-aided schools, describing the entire selection process as "vitiated and tainted".
A forum leader and protesting teacher, Chinmoy Mondal, stated that they have urged thousands of teachers, civil society members, and others to assemble outside Bikash Bhavan to intensify their protest and demand immediate talks with the chief minister.
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari met the jobless teachers at their protest venue to extend support, asserting that the party will not allow the assembly session scheduled next month to continue if the issue is not discussed. Adhikari said that he and other leaders of the party will extend all support to the eligible teachers in their battle. He added that the party will not allow the assembly session to be held in June if the ruling party attempts to scuttle their bid to raise the issue in the House, emphasizing that the teachers lost their jobs due to the state government's corruption.
