Jazz World Shaken: Kendrick Lamar Collaborator Ryan Porter Passes Away at 46

The jazz world is mourning the loss of esteemed trombonist and integral West Coast Get Down crewmember, Ryan Porter, who tragically passed away at the age of 46. His death was announced by fellow bandmate Tony Austin via Instagram, revealing that Porter took his last breath on May 16, surrounded by loved ones. The profound loss comes after Porter was involved in a severe car accident on April 28, which resulted in life-altering injuries and a subsequent deterioration of his condition despite receiving the best medical care.
Drummer-producer Tony Austin expressed his deep sorrow, stating that Porter was "like a brother" to him, having been a part of each other's lives since childhood. Austin highlighted Porter's infectious love for music and his overall compassion for humanity, qualities that he found truly inspiring and enriching. He acknowledged the widespread impact Porter had on many friends, loved ones, and family, finding solace in the belief that Porter's soul could now rest in peace.
Ryan Porter rose to prominence within the vibrant West Coast jazz scene during the 2010s. He was a key figure alongside other celebrated musicians such as Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Miles Mosley, Ronald Bruner Jr., Cameron Graves, and Brandon Coleman, who collectively formed the acclaimed West Coast Get Down. This influential collective has often been likened to the "Wu-Tang Clan of jazz" for its innovative approach and collaborative spirit.
Porter's talents extended beyond his work with the West Coast Get Down. He and the crew made significant contributions to Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed 2015 album, *To Pimp a Butterfly*. This landmark album not only debuted atop the Billboard 200 charts but also secured the Best Rap Album award at the 2016 Grammy Awards, showcasing Porter's versatility and impact across genres.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ryan Porter also released four solo albums, demonstrating his prowess as a bandleader and composer. His most recent solo effort, *Resilience*, was released in 2022. The theme of resilience extended into 2024 when he released a documentary of the same name. This film powerfully highlighted the crucial benefits of free music programs, specifically focusing on how they uplift aspiring artists across Los Angeles, reflecting Porter's commitment to community and artistic development.
Decorated saxophonist and close friend Kamasi Washington shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, mourning the loss of a lifelong friend. Washington reminisced about their many years together, the mutual learning and support, and the beautiful music they created and shared globally. He described Porter as "one of the most amazing human beings that has walked this earth," feeling blessed by their shared journey. Washington emphasized Porter's desire "to be a FORCE FOR GOOD," affirming that he was the complete embodiment of that ideal, and that his life made the world a better place. Washington also promised that Porter's "tribe" would look after his family, urging him to "Rest Well In The Arms of God, Soul Brother Number One."
Ryan Porter is survived by his two daughters, and in a show of collective support, members of the West Coast Get Down have launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist his family. As of press time, the fundraiser has successfully garnered over $42,000, underscoring the deep affection and respect held for Porter within the music community and beyond. Billboard has also reached out to Kendrick Lamar’s representatives for further comment on this profound loss.
