Israel's Dire Warning: Iranian Missiles Threaten East Africa
Israel has issued a stark warning regarding Iran's ballistic missile capabilities, stating that Tehran possesses the capacity to target parts of East Africa. According to a statement released by Israel's embassy in Kenya, a 4,000-kilometre radius extending from the Iranian capital, Tehran, encompasses a significant portion of the Horn of Africa and East Africa, potentially placing several key regional capitals within the reach of long-range missiles.
The Israeli embassy specifically highlighted several East African cities, providing estimated distances from Tehran. Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is approximately 3,200 kilometres away. Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, lies between 3,700 and 3,800 kilometres from Tehran. Juba, the capital of South Sudan, is situated just under 4,000 kilometres from the Iranian capital. Nairobi, Kenya's capital, is positioned near the outer limit of this extended range, estimated at roughly 4,300 to 4,400 kilometres from Tehran.
These revelations underscore how the geographical proximity between the Middle East and East Africa establishes a relatively close regional corridor. This closeness has prompted escalated security discussions surrounding the implications of long-range missile capabilities in the region. Israeli officials have consistently reiterated their warnings, asserting that Iran's missile arsenal is not limited to the Middle East but can indeed reach targets in other parts of Africa.
The timing of these statements is particularly significant, as they emerge amid heightened international tensions involving Iran and the United States. Analysts are increasingly dedicating attention to evaluating the potential reach and broader regional implications of Tehran's ongoing missile development programme, suggesting a growing concern over its strategic impact beyond Iran's immediate borders.
