Is Mollywood Unfriendly? Anupama, Simran, Nayanthara, Asin's Careers Raise Questions
The other day, speaking at an event, actress Anupama Parameswaran suggested that she was discouraged from advancing her career in Mollywood (after her debut with Premam). She was allegedly labelled a poor performer. In the following years, Anupama went on to do major movies in Telugu. Suresh Gopi, the Mollywood star hero, has backed her remarks.
It is often alleged that even actress Simran stayed away from Mollywood after doing just one film there. Since she didn't find a favourable environment there, she focused her energies on Tamil and Telugu movie industries. She became a star heroine in both fields.
Nayanthara and Asin, too, couldn't find a foothold in the Malayalam film industry despite their talents. Their fans have often argued that vested and entrenched industries actively discourage potential superstar actresses for whatever reason.
Those who defend Mollywood argue that Malayalam filmmakers fail to offer glamorous roles to their actresses. When these actresses find lucrative opportunities in richer industries, they lose interest in Mollywood.
